1981 RPO tag location?

Are you refering to the build sheet? If you looking for one of those stickers with the 3 letter RPO codes on it,GM didn't start using them until the late 80's I believe. Your build sheet is most likely on top of the gas tank, thats where mine was. If you shine a light up in front of the gas tank you will probably see it hanging over the edge of the tank. This has the all the RPO codes on it.

Nope. I know the build sheet is usually buried under carpet, or into seat springs. I've even found them in door panels and behind kick panel or sail panel trim. Full-size vans used to frequently get them stuffed above the fiberboard headliner. I know that even the later cars have more data on the build sheet than the RPO label, right down to trim, correct axle code (many RPO labels are NOT, incidentally), and items not normally found on RPO and dealer order sheets.

I meant the RPO label that replaced the metal trim tag that used to rivet to the firewall or door jamb. 'F cars had a plastic RPO label at least by 1982. 'P' cars had them in '83. I can't find either the tag nor the label. Then again, I can't find the A.I.R. pump, diverter valve, secondary air baffle on the E4ME, plug wire clip ring, half the VECI label, radiator splash aprons, A/C pressure cutout wiring etc. Looks like I have a real project trying to recover from a few years of neglect of a previous owner.

Thanks for the replies.

If your '81 was built at Bowling Green, you can call the National Corvette Museum (have your credit card handy) and they'll send you a copy of the original build sheet/broadcast copy with all the original codes on it. If it was built at St. Louis, no such luck.

C3 corvettes have traditionally had the build sheet afixed to top of the gas tank, including your 81. While you may find an occasional sheet elsewhere, the gas tank was the spot used always. The paint codes are on a metal tag on the drivers door jamb. Like was said, check your vin# and determine if your 81 is a St. Louis build or a Bowling Green. If it was BG then the NCM has the records and can duplicate your build sheet for you. The cost is around $25.
