1982 CE How do you get at the motor inside the mirror to check operation?

The mirror has to be removed. Not particularly easy to do.

Have you checked fuses, switches, and relays?

The mirror is not off.
The left mirror works ok,the right one goes up and down but not in and out out vise-versa.

You can remove the mirrors without removing the side window glass. Take the door panel off and use a 7/16" socketed type small wrench ( I used one from SnapOn) and be careful not to drop the nuts inside the door panel. There are two buts up inside those two holes that have to come off first. The harness is a PITA, but it can be done. Once you remove the mirror, you can get to everything and disconnect it. I had to remove both of my mirrors to repaint the car. To make it easy the next time, I also made the harness a quick disconnect for future maintenance. Hope this helps.

My bad for not making myself clear. You have to remove the reflective glass to get to the motor, not particularly the mirror. The problem is, they can break.
