1982 crossfire
my 1982 crossfire just started shutting off on the freeway.

at first it would just lose power at highway speeds. it would lose power then as i pulled over to the side it would regain power and start moving again as though nothing has happened. it felt as though it just ran out of gas.
additionally at freeway speeds it kicks and the tachometer drops rpm for a split second then it keeps running but today it just shut off on the freeway , however after i pulled over it restarted and i was on my merry way. im thinkin its the fuel pump, but i would like someone elses advice. anybody got any ideas?
i have changed the plugs, wires, checked the dist cap and rotor, adjusted the throttle position sensor, and changed the fuel filter.

there is a small rubber hose on the fuel pump. check this item . just a thought:ugh

It might be the temperature sensor, on the right front side of the engine,,,,,,,,,,,,,

temp sensor?

Thanks for the tip! :thumb
may i ask what brought you to this conclusion?
Is there any documentation anywhere that i can read up on to verify this possibility?
thanks i really appreciate your help.
grasshopper.

Will check it out!

when i drop the tank in 2 weeks i will change the pump , the small rubber hose , and the sending unit.
thanks for the tip :thumb

will let you know what i find.

why are you dropping the tank?????

the temp sensor is from experience, it may not be the problem but it can cause you fits and is rather simple to change.

Good luck

so the sensor u are talking about is on the intake manfold right? i think they called it the coolant temperature sensor, allegedly if this sensor is damaged it will affect the operation of the EFI. so it sounds like you may be on to something. i will change it right away on my next day off.
as for why i am dropping the tank........ i never mentioned it but my gas gauge is trippin, at first i thought i was gettin real good gas mileage cause it was at 3/4 of a tank for a long time. so i decided to buy gas and it took about 13 gallons, came close to walkin home. so since i thought that the fuel pump was bad i was gonna change everything at once.
sending unit, and fuel pump.
but i will change the sensor first and drive it around to see what happens.

thanks i will report my findings next week

Just my $0.02 but I'd clean both idle control motors while your going over envything. They can cause difficult idles and un and down RPM's.

I was asking about dropping the tank because you don't have to
do that for the things that you are doing.

So far no change

Well i changed the coolant temperature sensor, the car showed improvement but it still loses power on the freeway at around 65 to 70 miles an hour.
i changed the coil and distributor cap and the car showed improvement, installed an accel supercoil, runs real good, however the car still loses power.
i took out the ignition module from the distributor had oreilys test it on their machine it checked out O.K.

have not checked the fuel pump or the related hose yet.

when the engine is running sounds like it cant make up its mind as to how to run sounds like all of the sensors are having a conflict with each other,
like the engine keeps changing modes or something.

when i am on the freeway the car will run fine for awhile then after about 5 to 10 miles it will lose power and just fade out, most of the time the engine will stay running sometimes it will turn off, its as if the gas pedal loses authority among sensors then after i pull over it regains privelege and off i go.

thinking its the ECM, losing the idea that its the fuel pump.

might just take it to corvette express in vacaville, those guys are great. gotta figure this out.
will start reading the shop manual. (trouble shoot)

p.s. thanks to all you guys for your help.:eyerole

heres the latest

i changed the fuel pump, it was very easy.
bought a completely assembled sending unit/fuel pump came with a new little hose that everybody keeps talking about.
it came right out at the gas filler neck and went right back in no problem.
guess what?
it did not fix the problem.
next i decided to inspect the ECM and clean it up if needed.
turns out it was completely covered in white corrosion that looked like foam, this corrosion was all over the battery compartment, all over the outside of the ECM, and inside of the ECM.
so i took it apart to clean it,
guess what?
there are black objects inside that look like chips or ram or something one of them was completley covered with this gooey stuff that looks like glue or some type of resin. at first i thought this was normal or something , but them i realized that the guy who sold it to me found something wrong and tried to "band aid fix it" hopeing it would hold it together just long enough to sell the car.
well it worked, it also worked at making me spend a fortune trying to figure out what the heck was wrong with the car, and buying all kinds of parts. the first thing i thought when i came to this reaization is that the first week i had this car the radiator started leaking, when i took it out to take it to the shop it had the same type of gooey resin glue on it where the hole was. wish i could post this guys name all over the internet as a burn artist.
i took a picture of the ECM in case anyone wants to see it.
i will report back when i change it out in a couple of weeks and let you
know if that was the problem.

The IAC's (idle air control) on the throttle bodies might be sticking as well....that would cause idle speeds that are all over the place...

Just my .02 from the desert.....:w

corvette back in action/ bad ECM computer

Well people, after a trip to H--L and back, as i reported last time when i took the ECM apart and found it was covered in silicone, i replaced it with a unit from Autozone, the Crossfire Corvette runs great now. no more fluctuating tachometer, no more losing power and shutting off on the freeway at high speed. Ever hear about the con -artist that filled the transmission with saw dust to keep the car running long enough to sell it?u well we got a new one now. the idiot that took apart the Ecm computer and covered the circuit board with silicone to keep the car running long enough to sell it.

I want to thank all of you people who tried to help me and gave me all the tips and advice, also want to thank Shirley Copple of Autozone in Petaluma California for helping me locate the part i needed and making sure it was expedited.

The Crossfire now runs like a bat out H--L! :happyanim: :beer :happyanim:
