I put the short shifter arms on my tranny, which made shifting from reverse pretty stiff. In fact it would sometimes stick in reverse when first starting it up and it was cold. I would have to horse it around kinda hard to get it into first. Anyway, after driving it to work the collar would not work. It will not go into reverse and the collar just goes up and down with no result, I can't get my key out. Anybody have a clue as to what might be wrong, and how hard it is to fix?

You may need to adjust the cable

Also check that your reverse linkage is adjusted

I had the same problem when I installed the short-throw shifter arms on my 4+3 a while back. All I can tell you is the adjustment is critical. You must spend time and effort to be sure the gate lines up correctly or you will have problems with shifting, or even getting it into or out of gear.

Take it from experience, you don't want to be backing out of a parking place, in front of traffic, and have your linkage hang up with you not being able to get it out of reverse! :o

Ken, is it possible to adjust the linkage from under the car? My mechanic said that to do it right required going at it from inside - taking up the carpet and opening an access panel or something in the transmission tunnel.

The directions that came with my short-shift kit said to just make sure a 1/4" drill bit would pass between the linkage rods without binding. Mine passed that test, but I too have problems coming out of reverse (though not to the extent of the original poster) and esp. between 1st and 2nd.

Thanks!

The best way to adjust your linkage is to remove the interior panels or at least take off the center console plate, although I'm not sure of that. Sorry.

Well, it looks like the reverse lockout ring has broken and it seems that this part is nearly impossible to find. I'm trying to locate an 86' entire shifting assy. with the part on it.
