I hope someone can help me. I own a restored 1987 corvette convertible seems to have a ghost issue with fuel pumps. I have gone hr 4 of them in the last 6 months. Here’s what’s happening…

The car will start most of the time on the first crank and run with out any issues but every great once in awhile it won’t start. I will let it sit for awhile and it will start right up and not act up again for a few days. I will then go to start it and it will just crank. At this point I just replace the fuel pump and it starts all over again. I have gone thru this process 4 times in the last 6 months and I am getting tired of it can someone tell me what’s going on or recommend a reputable Corvette mechanic in Florida that can diagnose & fix the issue.

Thanks,
Shawn

It could possibly your fuel pump relay giving you intermittent problems. Have you noticed if it happens right after a rain or high humidity? A relay is a might cheaper fix than your fuel pump. I'd replace that and see if the problem returns.

ZumZum,
I have all ready done that & I still have the same issue. Its relly weired somethimes I smell gas when I am cranking it & somthimes I do not.

1) Have you checked to see if it has thrown any codes?
2) I am not sure about the VATS on the '87, but that might be a place to look also. It got to be an intermintent problem with mine starting until I installed a VATS bypass.

I have had it looked at by 3 techs & the issue is still there. Thats why I am attempting to figure this out my self I am tired of throwing money at it. Do you know if there is a tool that I can buy to check the codes out?

I thought about the VATS I had a 25th aniversy Camaro that had a VATS issue but it never caused the fule pump to blow out. Do you know of any thing else that could be replaced in the fuel syatem that could couse this this to blow.

Do you know how I bypass the VATS system? I have even considerid hard wireing the fuel pump to attempt to issolate the issue & work from there.
