I have a 1989 coupe with a factory non bose radio.
It worked fine until I put a wing on the back.
The people who sold me the wing say its just a coincodence that the radio quit after installing the wing???????
It does look like drilling the holes in the antenna metal plate would not hurt anything like they said but.....?
Any how when I turn on the radio now it starts to go on and the antenna starts to come up then immediatly shuts off and the antenna goes down. If I hold the button in then it works although the antenna makes a grinding noise for a second or 2 after extending all the way out....Also I cant remember if the button on the radio was suposed to stay in when i push it or if is suposed to return back out after i push it in. Right now I know that when i push it in it does not stay in.......like the dolby noise button stays in after u push it in. Is the problem with the radio or is it the relay or the antenna or did something happen when I drilled the wing.....Please help .,...,,,dumfounded,,,,,thanks....

Does your radio have a detachable face? Remove it to see if the switch goes through or is an integral part of the face. Usually if you go to a car audio place they can replace the face.If it were mine I would undo all the tiny screws on the back of the face and take it apart. Most of the time the contacts on the most used buttons will stick or get dirty through attrition. If the switch is an inclosed item you will have to replace the switch or the whole face. Otherwise most have a rubber pad with the buttons on it, when you press the button underneath a carbon connector is pressed down to the circuit board where it presses against the contacts on the board to make it work....the circuit board usually gets dirty and won't make contact...the rubber pad can be cleaned with alcohol and a toothbrush, the circuit board use a cotton swab and alcohol...let it dry and put it back together.
If this does not work let me know I may be able to fix it for you.

factory radio

since this is the factory radio.....would it not have a detachable face....i checked a radio just like it on a blazer and the on button stays in when pushed......so does that mean its the radio or could it still be the relay or could the button just be broke.....does the relay make the button stay in??.....appreciate any help???????

Sounds like the switch is faulty. When you press in on the switch it is supposed catch and maintain a connection. This allows power to the radio and antenna. Radio needs to come out.

thanks

thanks for the response........some coinsodense.......just listened to the radio ok before drilling holes then it quit right after......by the way if i hold the button in it works ok but the antenna makes a grinding sound for 2 seconds after being fully extended....does that make sence with what you have told me...........thanks again

anyone

does any one else have any input to what the problem is....
im still not sure.....
also on the metal plate under the fiberglass there is a plastic plug that is in there.....what is that for ...is it a insulator or ?
could that be the problem area??????
