1999 C5

Thinking about upgrading from an 1986 C4 to a 1999 C5. Any issues with the 1999 C5 that I should worry about? Should I hold out for a newer one?

Handsjg,
You might want to spend some time perusing our Knowledgebase to see if there proportionally any greater numbers of Technical Service Bulletins or Recalls for '99s as opposed to any other year of the C5 run. However, I am unaware of any issues on the 99s personally.

Generally, the C5's were a quality production run all the way through. Any year, I think, will be fine provided the specific Corvette you're looking at was well cared for.

The 99 model year was selected by the S.A.E. as the best engineered car,( tied with Mercedes SL ) for the top honors. My 99, 6 speed coupe, purchased new, now has 66,000 fantastic miles. I had numerous small items go wrong, but on the whole it has been the best of the 5,a 64,85,92 and 99 that I purchased new since 1964. Remember that all cars differ in all respects, BUT I got a fine one this round. Good luck on your anticipated purchase.

99 FRC driven at the speed limit will get 32+ mpg; your 86 will not do that.

I would suggest the same advice offered by so many others here, buy the most recent and low mileage model you can afford.

Other than that, it really depends on what options in which you're interested.

My 99 is a great car, just turned over 94K and only changed tires and a battery. The best advice is to just take care of it and drive it. I did change to the 2000 (new style), rims and people think it is a 2003 or 2004 because of being taken care of.
Make sure you get a C5 with HUD and enjoy.

Did the upgrade from a 95 to a 99. I put on 10,000 miles in one one year, and the 99 is just my weekend car!

I did miss the 95, but the 99 has treated me very well.

Be more concerned with the condition of the car you plan to buy than the model year,.they are all so similar and the C5s rides so nice compared to some C4s that many are daily drivers that were not really taken care of because the owner is not even "into" the car.

From personal experience, it's a whole lot cheaper to buy bride #1 something new to drive than to replace bride 1.0 with bride 2.0! And a whole lot more fun! :L Andy
