I think you're right. The 48 has the best combination of driver, crew chief and team but...the 99 is clearly a championship contender.

The problem is Johnson is going in to the last two races with a larger margin (106 pts) than he had at this point in time than in 06 and 07. That's going to be tough to over come because going into Phoenix the 99 is going to have to bank in 1) a top five and 2) Johnson having a very poor finish. The combination is not likely, especially considering the 48 sits on the pole.

That said, if by some stretch, the 48 does really bad, Cousin Carl is my man because the idea of a Dodge or, worse yet, a Toyota winning the Cup really irritates me.

NASCAR and ABC have their own 'Heidi' moment

In a made-for-television oddity reminiscent of the 1968 "Heidi" episode of NFL legend, ABC on Sunday cut away from the Checker 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race in the Eastern and Central time zones with 34 laps remaining. The network opted instead to show "America's Funniest Home Videos" as scheduled.

At that point, two red flags had delayed the race by about 45 minutes.

ESPN2 carried the race's conclusion in the Eastern and Central time zones, and it remained on ABC in the West.

Drivers didn't know about the move until after the race.

"It seems a little odd to me, as big as NASCAR is and as many people watch this sport," said Jamie McMurray, who finished third. "I just can't believe that 'America's Funniest Home Videos' would take priority over us.

"I mean, I like that show, but I'd rather watch the race."

In the National Football League version, the New York Jets were up on the Oakland Raiders 32-29 with 1:05 to play on Nov. 17, 1968. TV screens across the country flickered and the game vanished. And, suddenly, there was the children's movie "Heidi."

According to one account, there were so many calls from angry fans that NBC's switchboard blew 26 fuses.

The "Chase" was designed by NASCAR to keep fan (and media) interest in the final out come during the football season because many championships were already decided 6-10 races before the end of the season. The "Chase" has delayed that a few races this year and Jimmie is pretty much a shoe-in for the championship. ABC didn't need the NASCAR ad money enough to keep the race on ABC, so it switches to ESPN2. No big deal, nearly everyone has cable or dish now and switching ain't nothing.
The only thing Edwards can hope for is a wreck on the first lap that takes Jimmie out. Otherwise, Jimmie can cruise and join Cale at 3 championships in a row.

The really big news may be which teams fold over the winter while looking for sponsors.

Well Jimmie might get lost and forget how to get to Florida...not that I think it's very likely, but it could happen. He is the defending champion and just a few years ago the defending champion didn't show up for the last race of the year...maybe it could happen again...
