2001 Rear End Gear Change

I want to change the stock 2.73 rear end in my '01 M30 to the G92 3.15 option. In cruising other forums I found info that is a bit confusing. Do you have to change out the entire differential (from the stock M30 2.73) to put the G92 3.15 option in place? I know you want a matched set when you replace the gears but I remember reading something about the other components in the differential being stronger in the G92 over the stock differential that came with my '01 M30 2.73. Somebody set me straight ! Please.

Yes, I am pretty darn sure you have to change the whole thing! The carriers are different between the 2.73's and 3.15's. The 3.15 carrier can house any gear set.

Much easier to replace entire diff. It takes special tools to replace the gears within the carrier.

HI there,
Setting up a Getrag differential correctly is very time consuming and you must have the special tool kit to do it.
3.15 carrier is different than the 2.73, so it would be more cost effective to just purchase the whole unit and have it installed.
