With 80 miles on the odometer I went back to the dealership and asked, among other things, why the car seemed reluctant to take off when the clutch and engine became engaged. Unless I provided a lot of throttle or feathered the clutch, the car shook as though it might stall and as the video promised produced an incredible rattling noise. The general manager said they never looked at Corvettes until they had at least 500 miles, the rattle was normal and if there was a problem the cars computer system would let me know.

With 275 miles on the odometer, the engine quit at the end of an off ramp 3 miles from work. I limped in with warnings stating “engine operating at reduced power”. Later that day I watched, along with many others, my car being loaded onto a tow truck headed back to the dealership in Tysons Corner Va. In my immediate parking area at work, there is an AMG E55, BMW M3, AMG SL55 a Saab convertible and several Accura’s and assorted SUV’s. It was painful, the lone American car owner, to walk back into the office with all the “I told you so” glances.

The dealership called me late afternoon and announced they had put a new Throttle Actuator Control on the car and it was fixed. When I picked the car up, I felt it still had poor low-end power, especially noticeable at take off. But also noticeable at lower RPM shifts too. The service manager rode with me and said the cars performance was typical of other Corvettes. He did not have another manual transmission Corvette on the lot, other than Z 06’s, for me to drive and compare.

A week later I did get the chance to drive another manual transmission Corvette, and the difference was phenomenal. Immediately I knew that my Corvette had never operated correctly. Now here’s what puzzles me, The shop foreman hooked up a diagnostic reader under my dash and rode with me for several miles. He stated nothing showed up in the diagnostics that indicated any problems existed. He also said that there were no adjustments on the car, so the best he could do would be to start putting new parts, clutch, transmission etc… ect… until the problem was solved????????

1.Any ideas on why the car performs so poorly at low RPM’s, but otherwise seems Ok?

2. A brand new 52K Corvette that has never run correctly and the earliest my purchasing dealership would schedule the car back to be seen by a Corvette technician was one week later! That, and the fact that they did not correctly fix it after it was towed plus a shop foreman’s repair strategy of “well keep putting new parts on it until it is fixed” makes me not want to go back to that “car mill” in Tysons Corner. Anyone have a recommendation where I might take my car to have warranty repair work performed in the Northern Virginia area?

thnx/rh

I'm truly sorry to hear about your C5. The performance from your car and treatment that you're recieving from the dealership is unacceptable. I purchased my C5 brand new from Mike Pallone Chevrolet (703-451-4511) in Springfield, VA. Their service department is up to par so I would try giving them a call. I also use Lindsay Chevrolet (703-670-8181) in Woodbridge. Lindsay seems to accomodate fairly well too. I currently have approx. 12K on my six-speed coupe and she runs 10 times better now than she did new. I think I started noticing performace improvements around 9K mi....but nothing as you mention so don't believe the techs when they state that it's normal Corvette behavior. You might want to call Chevrolet directly and take it up a notch. Good luck!:pat

Welcome to :CAC

Very sorry to hear you are having problems with your ride...... :hb

By any chance have you checked the computer for the codes that were thrown? If you have trouble in the future that is crucial to diagnosing the problem.

With the car off, turn the key to the on position, dont start it. The hit the reset button to clear whatever is displaying at that point (things like "door open") then while holding the option button hit the fuel button 4 times. It will start to cycle through what codes are there.

Write them down and post them here.

I hate to say this but I have come in contact with more than one service person at dealerships that have no idea what they are doing with these cars, and have seen them "throw parts" at problems as well.

:eyerole

Good luck, I hope you get your problem fixed soon!

:CAC This site is incredible !!!!
Vette owners rock ;worship

Thanks VAmagred01 for the Northern Va, dealer recommendations. Contacted www.BBB.org and General Motors Customer Care Service. I'm hooked, I really want this yellow Corvette to perform as it should. I can tell you already that the treatment from GM doesn't even approach the SVT Ford customer service team. I was extremely surprised that Chevrolet did not have a seperate Customer Service department to handle their highest technology show piece. With my SVT Cobra I once got connected to one of the two mechanics that actually built THE engine in MY car. Todays experience with GM customer care was extremely sterile. They said it will be at least a week before they can get back to me.

Mick,,, the code check was way cool. thank you for taking the time to fill me in. The first code was 10 PCM - No Codes and then every prefix thereafter ended in - No Codes ie..38 RTD - No Codes,,58 SMD - No Codes,, 80 radio - No Codes. Does this mean that the computer see's nothing wrong with the car?

That's what it sounds like. The diagnostic mode goes through the different systems in the car and tells you what codes are set for each system. It looks like there are no codes set for any of the subsystems. Perhaps C4C5specialist can help you out.

I'm pretty fortunate for the dealer that I have locally. They have a Corvette specialist that works on nothing but Corvette. He has two bays dedicated to Corvette and he has 4 or 5 cars in his bays on any given day. They have a service rep that does nothing but schedule his time and interact with the Corvette owners in the local area. They take the time to get to know you and take car of your car. The Corvette specialist has been working on Corvette for 20 years and I was very impressed when he worked on my C4. You tell him what is wrong and he can tell you exactly what the problem is. He has one person that drives about 3 hours from Jacksonville to get his Corvette serviced.

Hopefully the recommendations for other dealers pays off and you can find someone competent to work on your car. Good luck, and welcome to the CAC. :w

Malloryr,

I live in alexandria va and have the best vette mechanic in the area I believe. My family has been going to them since the early 80's. I can give you the name and number if you need, but it is a private mechanic, I am not sure if that would void your warranty if someone besides a dealership mechanic worked on it, even though he is certified to work on anything and everything. He is definalty not a guy that throws parts at cars either, finds the problem, and fixes it. If you need the number, or anything else I can help with let me know, Im glad to help out another vette driver.

P.S. -I am surprised you were not happy with koons chevy in tysons (if that is the dealership you are talking about), they always seemed to be very professional.

I have a freind in your area, I talked to him today and he told me that he deals with Pohanka Chevy in Centerville (50 & 28) and they have a good mechanic named Joe that deals with nothing but Vettes....

May want to give them a try.

I'm not a mechanic, so I don't know how difficult this is to do, but how about simply swapping out the main computer in the car? A friend of my uncle's once bought a Corvette for cheap from a disgusted owner who just couldn't get the car to run as expected and just gave up. No codes were thrown, and all mechanical systems seems to be working correctly. On a hunch he swapped the computer for a new one and, voila, it ran like it was making up for lost time! Nothing else was needed. Of course there is not way for me to know what the problem with yours might be, but I offer this as a suggestion to you. Good luck!

I'm hooked

Yeah. Aren't we ALL.

Just remember that GM will use that and their huge size to stall you as long as they can. It happened tio me, until I got the right person in the zone office; which still took a long time. Explore the rules and comply with the lemon law, as they can be very restrictive and surprisingly short lived.

Also recall that there is another, perhaps better, and identical car somewhere else; this is not the ONLY Vette. This is business for GM and much more to us amateurs, who often buy based upon it and keep for the same reasons, until we get too disgusted and give up.

Just learn the rules and detach as well as you can. Document EVERYTHING and be persistant. Use dealers who are recommended here; not parts throwers. I eventually got GM to offer to buy my car back, and I probably should have done it. My car finally improved after it was out of warranty and the dealer no longer touched it.

My Acura dealer was no better than any other dealer where I got excuses, not remedies. I had a lousy experience at another one, too. Two of three of the local BMW dealers suck, so I don't buy all the crap about foreign dealers being bliss, nor their cars.

Best of luck, and personally, I'd not wait until the car had all sorts of miles to HOPE for a fix.

Move'in On

Thanks VAmagred01, mick_s3, Gorgon, 22229stingray81, bbw, WhalePirot for your help and suggestions. Car still seems a bit sluggish and uneven at the lower RPM range,,, but everything else about this ride really rocks! A little more throttle and some additional clutch manipulations when it starts to hook up and it seems to work OK. Probably some additional wear on the clutch, but hey.

The GM customer care center couldn't be more cold or sterile. Theirs and the dealership in Tysons Corner's motivation to react quicker to my concerns only came after a complaint to the Better Business Bureau.

I'm tired of BE-ITCHING and ready to enjoy this awesome machine! :Steer

i'm no where close to expert but could bad gas be a problem??? would that trip some codes though? have you gone through a tank yet? if the dealer said they are all that way them maybe all the gas they use makes them perfom that way, just shooting for a solution, although I am probably not right.

Could this be a fuel quality issue?
Run 91-93 octane.

Find a local Corvette club, get someone else to drive it and get their impressions.

Hello,
There are laws that protect us consumers from people who sell crap cars and don't want to take responsibility.

Go here: http://www.lemonlawamerica.com/

If I were you I wouldn't pay a single penny to get the car fixed cause it's brand new. With the Lemon Law, you may be entitled to get a completely new car. I haven't read through all the details for your state, but it's worth a shot.

Hope this helps!
