I have a friend that is selling a 700r2 with a shift kit out of a 1980 trans-am. I was wondering how hard it is to put this into a 1974 corvette with the v8 (original L82 has been swapped for an unknown v8).

I've been told that I will need custom mounts and a TV cable. I'm not really sure what a TV cable is? This would be my first transmission swap and I'm a newb at it. Where can I find the mounts and TV cable?

My other option is getting a 200r4. I've heard these are direct replacements for the turbo 350. Is this information correct?

You'll need to modify the drive shaft (I think for the 700 it needs to be shorter) the crossmemeber (the trans mount's in a different place than on the 350) the shifter (to reach all 4 gears manually) and if it has a lock up torque converter, you'll have to wire that too.

All things considered, the 2004r is a bit easier swap, it's the same length as the 350 so no new drive shaft, and 1st to 2nd are spaced a bit farther than in the 700. Plus, the 2004r is smaller in diameter and fits in the tunnel a bit better. Either will work well behind your engine and would continue to work well even if you did typical mods like a cam, heads, intake and so on.

You'll like the swap which ever way you go, the 350's a good trans, but the additional gear, particularly OD is a welcome change!!

There are vendors that offer the parts you'll need so it's not hard to get the mod done, but I promise, there will be suprises, as there are with any mod!! :)

Having done the swap to a 700R4... I'd say go with the 700 if you have stock gears and a mostly stock motor. To damoroso's point, there is a bit of a spread between gears in the 200R4 and first isn't as low (200R4's 2.87:1 versus the 700R4's 3.07:1).

I had a '78 with a 3.08 rear end, a TPI swap on a mill with almost 300hp at the flywheel, 3300lbs total weight, and a 700R4. It was like a C4 in C3 clothes.

Either trans will be great. Good luck!
