My wife and I did the BBORR over the weekend and had a great time. Cars ranged from 1955 Chevy street rods going fast (145 MPH) to a '13 Corvette and everything in between. Porsches, Bimmers, Cobras, Vipers, Audi R8s; you name it - it was probably in the race.
Corvettes were the car of choice again this year though. If I counted right there were 66 Corvettes entered out of 151 cars. There were 2 in the "Unlimited" class and Tom Whalen in his 2002 Corvette took top honors by averaging 172.249 MPH. I think that is pretty amazing since US-285 between Ft. Stockton and Sanderson, Texas is starting to show its age.
Fastest recorded top speed was by a 1965 Corvair in the Unlimited class at a little over 209 MPH. Ok, only about 50% of it is Corvair as it has a mid-engine SBC engine in it. It's street legal and carries the personal plate of "2TENMPH" on the rear.
We entered the 110 MPH class this year with our '13 427 Vert 60th Annie Edition. We still have problems slowing down enough on the way back and finished 4th - 0.03 seconds off 3rd place. The 110 class is the fastest class you can enter with stock seat belts and it's also the fastest class we need to enter as my wife is probably near or at her comfort level in this class. I drove the first leg and was pretty much on cruise control at 110 the whole way. She drove the return leg which has the technical sections early then eases up for the last 20 miles or so. After getting over 45 seconds behind and getting passed by the car behind us, I got her locked up at 120 on cruise for the last 20 miles. She blew by the car that passed us and never looked back again. We made up all that time and a couple of seconds too much. Oh well.
Had a great time down there in Ft. Stockton and Sanderson. Got to see a lot of friends that we only see down there. Ate some good food, checked out the Grey Mule Saloon a couple of times and did a little site seeing. Pretty good way to spend a few days.
