the 240 mph speedometer was received back yesterday, feb 14; from http://www.corvetteinstruments.com/ -WOW!!!. i had sent my original 85 mph to him and my conversion took a little longer than normal, as he called me after a week and said that he was across the state attending his sister's funeral - i was impressed with his customer service in view of his loss. as you can see, the face has only one scale on it, but it does have the corvette flags as original. the face is actually the general's export so the outside scale of 240 is actually "kph" not "mph". what roger scott does is not print the inside "mph" scale, but does print the "mph" from the scale and then the outer 0 - 240 scale. he then recalibrates it for the new scale. i will not miss having two scales on my speedo. and, will enjoy when all of the neighbors who look inside remark ""WOW! 240 MPH!!. the total cost was less than $100.00 including his service and the just under $20.00 in round trip shipping to and from florida from and to colorado. my super good neighbor brian johnson had a digital camera and was smarter than i am on getting it on here. it is cold in colorado, and i am not sure when i will get it installed, but am confident that it will perform without accurately. mine is only the second of two ever produced.

cool, so when ur doing like 50 it will say 80 or somthin? how will u really know how fast your going?

accurate speed readings

justin-not quite sure where you are coming from, but the needle will point to the correct speed since it has been recalibrated. example if the needle points to 100 mph, the vette will be doing 100 mph. just because it is the "kph" scale from the export speedometer head, it now reads as indicated, "mph". understand?recalibrated

That looks great! But I too am a little confused. The outer scale is actually KPH as it would be on an export unit, but are you saying that it is actually recalibrated so that is now reading actual MPH? I hope that wasn't confusing too :L If the speedo is calibrated to MPH it looks like he's going to get another customer soon.

D'OH! Posted at the same time as you. OK, I get it now :D

removal instructions

you can contact roger and i am sure he will be glad to get you a copy of easy-to-follow removal instructions. reverse them for the installation.

sorry if i confused anyone earlier. i got a little wordy in my explaination of how the process worked. what i was trying to convey, is that this is a real corvette face from the general, and roger is able to just put the 0-240 on it along with the "mph" -sorrt of pick and choose the best of both scales - then he actually tricks the speedo into relfecting actual miles per hour. now this will probably confuse the ncrs guys cause it looks so perfect. you cannot tell it didn't come from the factory, that's how good it is. and i am confident that when i get it installed, it will perform as good as it looks and accurately too. i admit that i was a little excited, and still am. hell, this is better than viagra! at least i heard that from someone else in here that has to use it. is it bragging if i say i don't need it?

Craig..... I got a HUGE grim just looking at the picture. Hey Scott, wonder which one of us will be ordering first? That loks GREAT!!! 240 speedo. You gotta love it. Thanks for sharing the site and the pic.

Now I would like to see the first 240 mph speedo owner actually approach that speed in a C3 ! Well,at least it looks good.

Let me get this straight. You are sending him your speedo and he works his magic? Therefore your mileage stays true to your car? Is this correct? Zane

yes zane

zane-your understanding is correct. he checks the entire head to make sure it is functioning properly, does not disturbe the odometer setting, and does his thing with the face and the calibration, and back to you. he told me up front that the service would be $80.00 plus shipping, unless the head needed some other attention. i sent the guy a personal check for $100.00, and he returned my speedometer with a refund check for $12.00. i was very happy, and still am.

please understand that one of the things i hated about my '81 was the fact that i was driving america's legendary sports car that had an 85 mph speedometer in it. now i am sure i am going to feel much better every time i slide behind the wheel.

pegged the speedometer

hey dave-let me ask you a question, if i was able to peg the old speedometer (85mph) that was in the car - then changed to the 240 mph speedometer - and when someone looks inside exclaiming wow! 240 mph!. am i still able to look them in the eye and say yes, and i have had the speedometer in this car pegged (and not tell them that it was the previous one)?

everyone, please i am not advocating that you install this wonderful option on your vette and drive to the limit of the new speedometer, and definitely not on public streets. my personal opinion is that this is a wonderful option for under $100.00, that you can install yourself and will give you more enjoyment and make your corvette look better than anything else for the money. period.

that is cool...

however, the idea of glancing at the speedo and seeing the needle at 3 o'clock expecting it to be at 25mph!!!!

this would take some getting used to!!!

then again, I have a digital speedo in my 92!!!

Sounds great

But I have one question, which is the same question asked earlier but with a little better explaination.
How does the calibration work? Because the kph incraments going around the faceplate are spaced differently than mph incraments. I understand there could be a conversion factor from kph to mph used, but mechanically how is this done?
I would really like to here how your test runs matching your speed to another cars speed go. And a 240 mph speedo sounds really great. Just getting one is worth it.
Good luck and have fun, let us know how it goes.

My 81 is from Canada and went to a cruise in last fall, the reaction was funny til most realized that it was KPH but most didn't see that my odometer reads 104,552 which is Kilometers also (64,000 + miles). Having 2 scales does take getting used to yet its still a conversation peice.

reply for 1981

i am sure that roger scott doesn't want to give away any of his trade secrets, as he is the only one today who makes this wonderful conversion with a 240 mph face for a 78-82 C3. the speedometer receives input from the transmission via a cable that is spun by a gear at the final drive. our mechanical speedometers have a series of counter weights and springs that when spun by the cable allow the needle to move and reflect the speed of the vehicle. by changing one or a combination of these parts the needle will register a different location on the sweep of the face based on the input of the cable spinning. maybe by trial and error, or probably with mathamatical exactness, roger scott is able to change the parts in whatever combination to so that after recalibration the needle will point to the correct speed on the face of the speedometer. that is about as simple as i am able to explain it for ya. did you look at tools under the corvette action center, and click on the speedometer calibration?

thanks chockey!

man, if it wasn't for those export speedometers, like yours is, i wouldn't be the proud owner of a 240 mph speedometer. i am sure yours stirs quite a lot of comments, when someone doesn't look closely-or know what they are looking at. i still get a big grin looking at mine even though i will never use up half of the scale. and, knowing that the C5s only go to 200 mph, gives me a wider smile too.
