My 1959 corvette just started making a clicking noise today, It seems to be coming from the pulleys and I can not tell if it is the one beneath the water pump or the water pump pulley that is making the noise. What are typical causes of this? I checked both pulleys for cracks or anything visibly that may be wrong but do see anything. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Jim

Never heard of clicking from a pulley. Check to see if the timing tab has been bent in towards the crank pulley. Baring that, I might double check to see if maybe a lifter is collapsed or rocker loose if you have solid lifters.Good luck, hope it's nothing really serious.

Water pump going bad? Impeller "flopping around" inside can cause this noise too. Chuck

Had a pulley crack once between the bolt holes, made a clicking noise sort of.

Try removing the belt, run the engine, Noise still there? Are pulleys tight? Does the waterpump feel smooth to turn? Gen or Alt bearings smooth? Good Luck?:confused

Pulley Noise

I just removed the belt and started the engine and the noise went away. Could it be the water pump? when i turn the fan it seems to move freely and I dont hear any noise coming from the water pump. I also checked the generator and it seems to move ok but there is a slight squeeking noise when I turn it by hand. After reinstalling the belt and restarting the engine, the clicking noise is back & it is coming from the front of the engine somewhere around the pulleys & not around the generator. The fan turns freely and is not hitting the fan shroud. Since the clicking noise went away when the belt is removed does that mean the crankshaft pulley is ok & not the problem?

Thanks!

Jim

Jim, to answer the pulley question, NO it doesnt mean the crank pulley is OK. I would remove both pulleys and INSPECT them! Its possible the waterpump is bad, but its rare. Happy Hunting!!!!!!:confused :)
