Hi guy's

I thought that my wife's car had a 350 ci in the front, but after I got it back from the tranny specialist he told me its a 427ci.

Can anyone tell me the truth?

The engine number is VO114CNP

Thanks,

Ryan

Those engines appear "very" different. Assuming you're referring to 350 (small block) vs. 427 (big block).............

One easy way to tell is to look at the exhaust manifolds (or headers if you have those). If the center two outlets are side-by-side, you've got a small block. If all four outlets on each side are spaced evenly apart....big block.

I wish I had a 427....

Seriously, What year model is your Vette. 427s were only available in 67-69 year models. (I believe those were the only years)

Also what 67HEAVEN said, the best way to tell a Big Block from a small block is the exhaust manifold.

Another thing our new friend should consider. It's not easy, sometimes impossible to tell the displacement of an engine by just looking at it. If boring and/or stroking has been done, even the numbers will lie.

Small blocks:
265c.i. - 1955-56
283c.i. - 1957-61
327c.i. - 1962-68
350c.i. - 1969 on
Lots of different horsepower variations within these engines.

Big blocks:
396c.i. - 1965
427c.i. - 1966-69
454c.i. - 1970-74
Lots of different horsepower variations within these engines.

The above applies to Corvette engines. Other Chevy (non-Corvette) big blocks included the 366c.i. (truck), 402c.i. (referred to by Chevy as 396), 502c.i. (across the parts counter) and now 572c.i. (parts counter).

"V" is Flint Engine, and all they made was small-blocks; if it was a big-block, the code would start with "T" (Tonawanda). It's a small-block 350. I'm on the road in New Jersey (3-day Dragster School starting tomorrow) and don't have my references handy or I'd tell you what the "CNP" code is.

Of course, it is possible to build a 427" small block, but that would be custom work changing the bore and strok,e so (as 67HEAVEN says) the numbers would not mean anything in that case. But that works both ways: if the engine block has been internally reworked, there is no way that the mechanic would be able to tell it is a 427, just by looking at the outside of it.

Sounds like you definitely have a small block, though, unless John is wrong. And John usually seems to know his stuff, so I'd say your mechanic is mistaken...

John, why didn't you tell us earlier!! A bunch of us Jersey Vetters could have gotten together with you and that would have been fun. :( :D

Ryan,
Bad news, it is not the original engine. The CNP suffix is for a 1970 350ci/250hp (gross) engine out Caprice/Bel Air/Kingswd.

By the way, if the shop cannot tell the difference between a small block and a big block, I would very quickly find a new shop to do my work.

Tom,

This guy did a real good job on the tranny. The only problem is he drinks scoth whiskey after work. So when I went there after work and maybe he saw the engine grow bigger after a few glasses.

Concerning the engine I was told when I bought it that it was indeed a 350 ci but I didn't know that it was an older engine compared to my car(1977 coupe). But I'm happy withe the engine, because it really kiks ....ss. I think I'm doing 0 to 60 in 6 seconds, but I'm going to this test on the strip one day to be sure!!

Like I said in my previous post I think I have over 350hp with the new setup. But I also need a Dyno test and I'll let you know later on.

Thanks,

Ryan

As soon as I get home from work, I'm gonna hit the bottle hard & open my hood & maybe I will see a 572bb crate motor in there :bar

Yup, should have remembered you're from New Jersey - I was at Atco Raceway for three days and stayed in Mt. Laurel; renewed my old NHRA Dragster License (you never know when you might need it :D ):

valve covers alone should tell big block from small.
I had a couple of 427s a 67 and 68 they both had chrome covers stock and tonawanda stickers on them.
427 covers were half again as big as 327 or 350 covers.
steve!!!

I dont remember the exact no. of the eng it was a 427 400 hp in the 67 the 68 was a 427 425hp
the L 89 was a 396 375hp which was really 425hp chevy used to underrate some of their engines back then.

Are you talking Corvettes here Steve?

1967 - No chrome valve covers on any big block Corvette except the L-89 (427/435hp with aluminum heads).

1968 - There was no 425hp 427 in Corvette. Only 390hp (L-36), 400hp (L-68), 435hp (L-71), 435hp with alum.heads (L-71/L-89) and 430hp (L-88)

Maybe you're referring to Camaros or Chevelles, etc.

your right about the 67 covers
I had a bad pushrod and I took it to a local dealership back then still had warranty .
well some friends of mine worked there and put on L88 heads so I really never new the exact horsepwer after that.
the 68 came stock with the 390hp eng I blew that up I got a deal on a 396 425 hp so thats what it wound up with and it did have the chrome covers
I should have explained myself better
by the way I think the 67 was 400hp stock
steve!!!! memory going bad
