I have been trying to come up with a good combo for a Big Block that would produce around 500 HP. Everytime I price out the parts and machine work, I keep coming up with just under $7,000. For that price, I can buy a 502-502 Crate complete, but partially assembled, and with a warranty. I really like the idea of producing that much HP on pump gas.

Has anyone bought this engine, and how did you like it?

Bill

one of our club members got one and put it in a 76 i think and has a 6 speed is an absolute animal steve :eek :crazy

I really appreciate it. The more I think about it and research it, I believe that's the way to go. I plan to start out with a Turbo-400 built by B&M, then eventually I want to get a 6 speed.

A good friend of mine has a Donovan in his '67 coupe told me that if he had to do it over, he would go with the 502-502. That's what got me to thinking about it. He just put a 502-502 in his boat, and it is a screamer!

I understand that the 572 is going to be way radical with 12:1 compression. All of that and a warranty too....!

Bill,

We have the 502/502 in our 67. It's hard to beat the performance for the price and the warranty. The installation is pretty straight-forward especially if you already have a big block car.

There are a couple of differences from the Mark IV blocks though to be aware of. There are no provisions for a mechanical fuel pump nor the location for the clutch "Z" bar attachment. You can use an electric pump mounted close to the gas tank and you can get a plate from folks like Scroggins-Dickey for the clutch mechanism.

I saw the 572 in Detroit and the new ZL1. On that one I was given an estimated pricing of $18,500 :eek but have also heard of even higher prices quoted as they plan to make only 200 of them.

It's a 572c.i. not 672.

ZZ-572 in both 620hp and 720hp versions.
The 620hp version is 9:1 compression and pump gas. The 720hp one is 12:1 compression.

tom...

I could give you info on a 383 that makes 540 hp 519 ft lbs torque for about $4500, send me a PM with your email if interested.

A guy at my local drag strip put the ZZ502 in his mid-Seventies C3. It has a THM400, 'on-sale' converter, 3.90:1 rear gears, and 29" x 11" slicks. He ran 12.03 @ 112 MPH (that is ZO6-territory, friends!) before he busted his rear-end! 502 HP, 567 ft/lb of torque, on pump-gas, with warranty. NO street-tire will hook that kind of torque.....Maybe THESE are 'the good old days'.....?

I have the 502 Ram Jet in my 2800 lb '68 roadster. I have not had a chance to run at the strip yet, but I have run against a friends '63 with a 383 that runs consistent 11.8's.

This was on the street, and rolling start. Even with rolling start, I have some traction problems (13" wide Pirelli P7's), but I pull him quite well through part of third gear. That's as fast as we both wanted to go on the street.

I have some slicks on the way and am hoping for mid 11's.

Does that sound reasonable?

I don't se why not. I assume you weigh less than a mid-'70s C3; traction will be your biggest concern. I think the guy who run 12.03/112 shifts at 5300 RPM; the cam has no smoke above that RPM (according to him). I'd think 3.55s/3.70s would do two things; help maintain traction (less torque multiplication), and keeping RPM into reasonable range. Just my $.02 worth.....

With a 2800 lb '68 roadster you should be in the mid 10's easy if not low 10's.
My car weigh's the same with a 427 small block and runs 10.80's

I won't go 'QUITE' that far; traction (and the C3's rear-end ability to handle the torque) will be your biggest adversary. You've got weight & torque in your corner; the rest is up to you!!! Good luck; keep us posted.....
