I've been perusing all the manuals I have and none of them list either a lubricant for the transmission or show where one might put such a lubricant into the transmission.

My '47 Pontiac had a filler hole on the side.

Does the transmission get oil from the crankcase?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

No.

Origional specs call for SAE 90 "Multi Purpose Gear Lubricant". It's available at any auto parts store or your GM parts counter.

The 4 speed trans holds 2 1/2 pints and is filled to even with the fill plug hole. The fill plug is on the right (passenger) side of the main case just in front of the tail housing bolt boss. The drain plug is on the same side but further forward on the bottom.

Here's a picture from my manual.

Tom,

Once again. Thanks.
I've got some ramps on order. When they come I'll be able to get under there and have a better look. I assumed there would be just what your photo shows, but I don't find any mention of it or of the appropriate gear lube in my assemble manual.

I guess that one great reason there is this forum.

Thanks again.

If your car still has its T-10 4-speed, you'll find two plugs on the passenger side - the lower one is the drain plug, and the upper one is the fill plug.
