Hi Gang,

Well, it's time for some info gathering, in order to get ready to work on my '59 (AMEN). Here are some of the preliminary questions I have:

1. In between the braces on the firewall, mine is currently painted black.. Question is, should that area be FLAT or GLOSS black? Also, should the black be only IN BETWEEN those braces, or extend out to the EDGES of the firewall toward the outer body?

2. I am planning to do the interior in black. The gauge cluster needs to be repainted. I'm assuming that should be in GLOSS black? Also, I believe someone said before that this section should simply be painted and NOT buffed to a shine?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Jim

sorry, I don't the answers for you but you know plenty of others on here will.

nice to see you post again, it's been a while!

Jim,

1) My guess is flat black, but better confirm.

2) My guess is simply paint, but it's your car, buff it out if you want.

Do you have a copy of Noland Adams book ? That thing has a wealth of info in it. If you don't have one you can borrow my copy if you'd like. I alos have a copy of "Road to Top Flight by Paul Iaffaldano; another good book with some nice info and pictures in it, even if you're not going the NCRS route. Also have an Assembly Manual (not too good of a copy though).

Let me know if I can be of any help.

Hi Barry/Bernie!

Great to hear from you two- Gimme a call and let me know when you'd like to come down! I PM'd you my phone #.

Jim

Hi Jim,

I've been pondering those questions since I got your email.

1. My firewall is black all the way out. I know of a 23 year old that spray bombed it back in 1971 though. :eyerole I'm sure it is supposed to be all low gloss black like the rest of the under hood and engine compartment area. Not flat or high gloss outer body laquer.

2. Guage cluster housing and other interior parts and inside the trunk are black laquer left as sprayed. not buffed. I have an old Corvette repair manual that lists a DuPont flattening agent to mix with the interior color but I think it is believed that this was not done at the factory.

Not sure what "braces" you're referring to, but all the underhood blackout was originally an "eggshell" black gloss - like semi-flat. John Deere "Blitz Black" is about as close as you can get in today's paints.

Thanks guys for your input- The "braces" I'm referring to are the aluminum brackets that are on the firewall and the inner fenders bolt/screw onto. They look like this when looking at the firewall from the front of the car:

\ - - - - -/
-|------|
-|------|
-|------|

Currently on my car, only the area "inside" those lines are black (and a faded black at that). Sorry for the horizontal dashes, they were the only way I could keep the verticals in place..

Thanks!

Jim,

Finally got your PM with your phone numbers (thanks); I kept looking in my personal AOL e-mail account for the PM !! Didn't realize you could send PM's on this forum.

Anyway, I'll give you a call someday and come on down; I'm out of town a lot (and then when I DO get home there's plenty of "Honey do's" to be taken care of) so don't think I'm ignoring you if it doesn't happen right away. I'll bring the car and some of the books I have to see if they can help you out any.

Later,

Bernie O.
