Can anyone tell me what kind of gear luricant is in a 94 six speed? The owners manual say it's 5 W 30 "Gear Oil". That sounds like motor oil to me. I've never heard of 5 W 30 gear oil.

Thanks:v

Yep...its motor oil ...The best fluid to use is the BMW M5 motor oil (available only from your local BMW dealer)<--Highly recomended. # 2 is the Red Line manual oil. #3 is the Mobil 1 engine oil

I just had my fluid changed at the dealer and he used a fluid called Synchro-Mesh(sp). It's a fully synthetic fluid and I have noticed a big difference in shifting in my 95. I'm sure you can get it at your Chevy dealer. Not sure what they charge for the fluid. I can find out more about the fluid if you're interested. Many here will recommend Redline or other synthetic fluids.

I have heard that Red Line and Lucas make a gear lube oil that is rated the same as engine oil. Could be a gib difference.

Go on the net and acontact ZF. They will tell you what is the recommended trans oil. There is a GM part number for ZF 6 speed transmissions and you can get the oil over the counter. ZF also recommends a synthetic oil sold at BMW dealers for there ZF's.
