61 front letters - placement

Can anyone verify this dimension for me? I just want to be within about a 1/4 " A consensus would be great. Ray if you're out there I know you have this dimension. :)

Thanks all!

Hi! studiog

I set mine 2 3/4" from the chrome edge to the bottom of the V in Cor V ette. I checked the 61 AIM and could not find any GM measurements. If I had to do it again, I would use the template that was sent to us earlier and I would lay it out on a different sub straight and drill it. I would then install the letters and make adjustments. I would then use this as a guide to drill for the letters. I can't remember who supplied us with the template, but it was from a 62. The NCRS JG states that the letters may not be straight and may be cocked a little. I am paraphrasing this point, but after I applied the letters I was not happy with the results. I hollow ground a few of the letters and filled with glass matt and resin and readjusted the letters and to my liking.

Hi Ray,
Thanks for confirming that dimension. The template we got from another CAC member had a slight upward arc to it to compensate for the belly in the front panel but it didn't look right to me so I made a new template from it and straightened it out so there is no arc. I placed the template on the car and I am happy with the way the letters look from different angles so I think I am going to go with it. I attached a couple of photos so you can see what I'm talking about. I'll let you know how it winds up.

For sure if your happy with the template please share it with me.

Its funny but this was in my thoughts as I was driving to work today
"How the heck am I going to get them straight"

Hi Larry, You are certainly welcome to the template but lets see how I wind up first to be sure it is satisfactory. The studs on the back of the letters are 1/8" and I drilled the holes 1/8" also. The letters fit very snug. I think I am going to drill them out to 9/64" ( 1/64th bigger) the next size up. Hopefully this will give me a little wiggle room to make adjustments. I'm assuming your holes were filled with body putty at some point as mine were.

Be careful on how much wiggle room you allow. The tolerance is very close and you might see some hole. The post is very close to the edge on some letters.

Yes Ray thanks, I was concerned about that but it looks like I'm okay with the 9/64ths but I wouldn't go any larger. The letters are in and they look good. From straight on they look perfectly parallel but from certain agles and distances it looks too have a slight downward arc at the ends, but it is very minor.

Here are the letters attached to the body. I don't think the pictures do it justice but I am happy with the results.

Gary

The letters look great!

Thanks Ray. Keep us posted on the progress with the 63 Split. Can't think of anything better to follow up the 61 with!

61 letters

Hi! Roy

Good to here from you again!! . My 61 had front-end damage that had been repaired by the second owner. He used a 1960 clip for his repairs. I replaced this with an original GM panel and it was not drilled for the Corvette letters. I used your tracing as a confirmation tool for the 60 clip. The NCRS JG states that the letters may very in placement and not look uniform. After I drilled and set the letters I wasn't happy with a couple of the letters orientation. I repaired the area and re-drilled. Studiog attacked the problem a little smarter that I did and only had to do the work once.

Thanks for your help and how is your project (1962?) coming!

Roy the letters were a tremendous help. I used your individual letter punches and placed them on a straight plane rather than a slight arc. I think they are on an arc to compensate for the slight roundness of the front panel. Each letter is spaced 2" apart. I think my letters and cove trim holes were filled years ago just to do a quickie paint job on the vehicle and also when body work had been done. I'm just glad they didn't fill in the top fender trim holes. :)

Ray it was the feedback I got from you that made the letter project go easier for me.
Thanks again to both of you.

When I made the tracing for the letters I used the emblem
holes as a reference and punched the letter holes with
the paper on the panel. Sorry that it was not a direct
transfer. What I wondered before and did not ask is what
happened to the original holes , were they lost in the paint
process??

Not to hijack a thread but.

This is where I am keeping all of my photos of the car restoration,Thanks again for the lead on the car.Its came along way from when we rolled it out of that barn up in gods country.
It Should be done by spring. If you ever do decide to sell one of your C1'S let me know I might be ready for another project. John Mcgraw keeps telling me how nice these new computer controlled motors are,

OK

So I just got my letter emblem set and it seems that all of the holes are on 2 horizontal planes,Some of them have a pin in the top and some have a pin in the bottom on the same plane.Meaning if I placed a line acros the header horizontally and then measure down 3/8 th of an inch or what ever it is I would then have the bottom horizontal plane.

Then I just have to figure out the spacing and where excactly I have to place the holes?

It does not seem like there is any room for error here.

Larry, The holes aren't simply on two planes. I was thinking the same thing when I first got my letters. But after laying my template on a drafting table I abandoned the idea of two planes. The letters are all 2" apart from the outer most end of one to the outer most end of the next. I will gladly send you my template and the one I got from Roy. I would strongly suggest you test it on a piece of plywood, corrigated or foil backed 1/2" fiberglass ductwork :L first before drilling your front panel. I drilled out small pilot holes for easy centering then finished off with a 9/64" bit, but no larger. Let me know if you want the templates or if I can be of any additional help.

Larry,
The templates are on the way. The one with the purple masking tape around it is on a straight plane. The other one has a slight arc to it. Good luck!
