64 Gas Gauge

We are trying to fix the gas gauge on our '64, but in the process we've burned up 4 sending units on two different guages. One was a "new" guage bench-wired to the sending unit. Is this a common problem? What should we do?

The midyears use an oddball 3-wire sender system with a direct 12-volt feed circuit that was never used on any other GM car except Cadillac; there's a good section on it in the '63 Corvette Shop Manual.

Thanks, John. Unfortunately, all four sending units WERE the 3-wire systems.
