Many of you have seen this '65 race car at The National Corvette Museum.

But, what is the purpose/function of the bulgie midsection in the side tubes?

Exhaust tuning? Cooking lunch? The remains of a Mustang that got sucked in through the carb?

I would say a muffler. You can see where they connect it at each end. Normal attachment device for quick removal. Like was said, mufflers needed most places nowadays. 100 db at most tracks.

or a mustang:D

I know this is going to sound lame, but at least in drag racing its kinda nice to not have to listen to all the open header JAFCamaros running 15's. My C5 with an aggressive cat back won't even pass sometimes. On a road course its not near as irratating.
