I am in the process of buying a nice 67 Coupe this week... It is a small block, 4sp, side-pipes, 41k miles, in excellent shape.... except:
The car is complete numbers matching, except the block is a CE replacement sometime.... Question: How much does this hurt the overall car value? The rest of the car is in excellent shape, except for the replacement block....
Second area of question... The hood is a BB stinger hood, but no 427 emblems on it.... It is a late 1967 production build (September, 67) per the numbers. I have heard that at some time in the late model year, they ran short on SB hoods and installed BB Stinger Hoods.... Can anyone confirm this one way or the another?

The car is very solid, drives tight, and is priced in the high $40's...

Any thing I should be aware of would be appreciated...
Thanks

well, you already know it is NOT numbers matching with a CE block! so, how much does it hurt value - you are over-paying now

The CE block could have been dropped in during the warranty coverage period, or last week having lived the last 40 years in a dump truck. In either case it's not the original engine and carries the same stigma as an NOM car. Which engine option did the car start with?

The factory stinger hood on an SB car is myth AFAIK.

I would also question the true mileage on the car and whether the side pipes are legit.

Look on ebay and other sites to see what non matching engine cars are selling for. Tank sticker? Side pipes? Don't overpay. It might not have been an original 4 speed either.

After what I went through when I sold my '67 coupe 427/390 non-matching number I swore I'd never buy a non-matching mid year again. I even had the original tank sticker that I removed and preserved myself so there was no doubt as to what the car really was. It just didn't have the right numbers on the block. Even though it had been frame offed before I got it and was a Goodwood green beauty with headrest seats and black interior people would just hang up when I told them the engine story. It was lightly modified and had a lot of extra chrome on the engine but all of the original components were there except for the original block and the carb.

The magazines lead you to believe that there is a big marked for non-original/modified cars but take it from me you have to find the right person before you will make a sell if you ever need to. About 10 to 1 will just walk away. Even if they don't really know what numbers matching is they do know that is what they are looking for.

One thing to consider is if it was matching numbers Pro-Team would want at minimum $69000. for it, probably much more with the low miles and condition. If the miles are correct and it is in top condition needing nothing top to bottom (except correcting a few non-original items) then the price is not too bad but I'd try to knock them down several thousand by showing them what it is going to cost to make it correct again (even if you have no intention of doing it).

Tom,
Thanks. It is a solid 67 Coupe, with numbers showing the end of the MY run, plus it is a 4sp, 327-350 car. Condition is excellent, fresh paint, interior is in excellent shape, all gauges work, all interior lights work, the mileage of 41k matches the title, and is a three owner car. There are no stress-cracks on the car, a no-hit body and the underside is in excellent condition. Original spare is in the back with jack and tools and leather cover still with it. The car actually came from the St. Louis area, per the paper work existing, and the tank sticker is still with the car. It is not a frame-off, but very clean from one end to the other. I know I would love it to have the matching engine numbers... but, it does not. The price is in the high 40's...but my plan is to keep for a few years before making a turn towards another. Plus, enjoy it in the coming warmer months and some small car shows. :cool

Can't be a September, 1967 build - '67 production ended in July; do you have photos of the VIN plate and trim tag?

The big-block hood substitution allegedly occurred in late February or early March, but not one has ever been documented in over 20 years of judging them; LOTS of SB owners bought BB hoods and swapped them.
