Sooner or later I plan on getting a repro Delco battery for my '67 SB. I know the length and width of the battery, from the dimensions of the battery tray. What I don't know is how high from the bottom of the battery is up to the top of the water cell caps.

The reason I am asking this is tomorrow I am going drill the holes for the radiator expansion tank holder so I can pound in the rivets to the inner fender. The fiberglass is new, so I don't want to make a mistake and drill the holes too low, nor do I want the expansion tank so high that it will interfere with taking off the expansion tank cap.

My question is does anyone know for sure exactly how high the tar top battery is? Thanks in advance! :beer

67's didn't use a tar-top battery - I assume you really mean the resto version of the OEM Delco R-59 Engergizer battery. If you're planning on getting it from "Restoration Battery", give them a call at (513) 451-1038 and they can give you the dimensions. Current replacement Delco Group 24's are 8-1/2" high (not counting the terminal posts), for reference.

Be sure and keep the restoration battery in a good state of charge; they're "old-tech" inside, and one deep discharge and they're toast due to sulfation of the plates.

Thanks John, while I got you.......the factory '67 Delco batteries were ALL black; that is, the "DELCO" script is not painted yellow, correct? :)
