Hi everyone. I replaced my starter and battery and now it starts with ease. I used to have to try a few times, but I got the biggest battery they had. Some outrageous starting crank number. Anyway. Every fourth time or so that i start it the starter just spins. I can hear it. It's a terrible noise. I have to get out of the car and rock it back and forth a few times while it's in gear to get the teeth of the starter back in the flywheel. Any idea what to do to fix this??

are you saying the starter spins but the gear is not being pushed into the flywheel/flexplate or that is stays there engaged and does not retract?

make sure its mounted properly, i dont know if any shims were used but double check that. also, check the solenoid to make sure it is properly pulling and pushing the gear out and make sure the gear clearance is adjusted properly so it makes the proper contact with the fylwheel. and check to see if any teeth are missing in the flywheel, that will make some funky sounds if a few are missing. hope this helps.

Possible Flywheel Problem

Since you have already done the good things, battery and starter. I suspect that the flywheel ring gear is bad. When an engine stops, it normally does so at nearly the same position every time. By rocking the car you do move it to another position that perhaps the teeth are in better overall condition. Check the ring gear to see if this possibly your problem. :upthumbs

thanks a lot. any other suggestions anyone?
