68 Tachometer

A prior owner of my 68 - 427 replace the original distributor with a Delco electronic. This of course disabled my tachometer as there is no physical connection for the cable. Is there some way I can get the tach working again through some type of conversion kit. Any suggestions of what I need to do or where I can get one at a good price would be great.

Hey dnewton, There are HEI dist. made with a tach drive, but they are very expensive. Another option is going back to the original set up add a msd 6al, blaster coil, and mallory points and you have a great ignition system. In my humble opinion, of course. peace. Bud

There is no "conversion kit" available to do this. You will have to either change the distributor or change the tach. If the car is otherwise mostly original, my suggestion is to acquire a tach drive points type distributor like what came on the car ... readily available used / rebuilt on eBay and most vette suppliers. I'm assuming you currently have the Delco HEI dist that has large cap with coil mounted in center of cap (no center coil wire, just 8 plug wires)? If so, you can retrofit an electronic tach from a 75 thru 77 vette and trigger it with signal from "tach" terminal at top-side of HEI dist cap. Such tach available as above.
