I am going to look at a 1969 427/435 L71 convertible this week . Can anybody help me with the Id codes I need to look for. If have a 1971 and I know where to look on it. Is it the same for a 1969?
Is the engine id code in the same place, and is the vin number part of the engine block code like the 1971?

Any help or links would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jerry

Sound like your looking at a high dollar car .so first and foremost document are the most impotant.I would definatley go with a note pad full of information you should be looking for and check it off as you go.If it was a midyear I could tell you what to look for to eliminate the possibilities of it being a small block to a big block convertion but the sharks I dont know.Notice I say to eliminate the possibilities there is actually NO way to prove or diprove its a big block with out documents.Good luck and boy are you in for a treat when you get to feel how hard that car can plant you in your seat

Jerry, You need to pick up the corvette black book. It was well worth the money when I was looking for my corvette.
Good advice from IH2LOSE.
I'm no pro at this but the numbers should be in about the same places.
The suffix on the 69 engine ( from the book ) only had two letters unlike your 71 which had three.
In 1969 there were 6 combinations that I can see for the 427/435 .....LP:manual tran, aluminum head....LR:manual tran....LT:manual tran, heavy-duty clutch....LU:manual tran, aluminum head, heavy-duty clutch....LW:auto tran, aluminum head....LX:auto tran.
Good luck...I love those 72 and earlier corvettes!!!

69 L-71

My 69 L-71 has a head stamped no. of: T1207LR 19S712094.

Translates to date of 1207 is Dec. 7, 1968. Vin sequence of 12094 indicates an early 69, assembled approx. Jan. 1969. You can also check id plate on drivers door for assembly date. Mine shows F03, which I think is Jan. 3, 1969. If you remove valve cover, mine has casting no. of GM3919840. One is J-31-8 and other is L-3-8, being Oct. 31 and Dec. 3, 1968.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I checked it out today and all the numbers match correctly so I think Im going to buy it. It needs some body work but the engine runs great.
