Anyone know of a header that can be used with the 69 factory side exhausts? I have the Hooker sidemounts but prefer the look of factory pipes. Also which would be better performance-wise?
Thanx!

Heddman makes headers that the collector matches up with the factory sidepipes. I have them on my 63 and they fit great.

Thanks Ol Blue,Would that be part # 68280-6? Did you have to make any modifications to the fender skirts or exhaust pipes?

The only thing that I had to do was cut the sidepipe exhaust off to fit up to the collector extensions, and it was a perfect fit alignment-wise.

It's been too long for me to know the Heddman part number I'm afraid, sorry.

I had them nickel plated and chromed without the copper flash since I was told the copper is what makes them turn blue. Seemed to work just fine. This was before ceramic coating was available.

I've never had a header leak and they have been on for over 25 years.

Good luck

re sidepipes w/headers

That' a nice car Ol Blue the color and the pipes beautiful. Always wanted one. Definately gotta put sidepipes on. Got another question about the routing of the ehaust pipe where the pipe meets the header is there any kind of odd bend to get the two to meet. I' m concerned with hurting performance since I just put $$$ into engine performance. You wouldn't have a pic of header to pipe join? That would definately answer all my questions.

thanks

Thanks for the compliment on my car. It was my first Corvette, and my first new car so it is pretty special to me.

I'm sorry that I don't have any pictures to post and the car is currently stored out of town. I'll see if I can get a picture taken, but it might not work out.

The header collector is in perfect alignment with the sidepipe where it turns under the car on it's way to the exhaust manifold.
The primary tubes bend toward the side of the car and come together just like the original sidepipe exhaust.

No bends are required for fit. My headers came with an extension that bolted to the collector. It tapers down to 2.5 inch and matches up to the sidepipe perfectly. I clamped mine, but you could weld it for more reliabililty.

Muffler sound?

Ol Blue, What muffler do you use on your sidepipes? How loud would you say they are? Thanks, Fred

Yes, the headers flare out to match up with the sidepipes. Perfect alignment to the sidepipe as it turns toward the engine.

I have a set of orignal big block factory sidepipes behind the headers and they are pretty much blown out by now, and probably straight-thru.

I usually run about 3700rpm on the road and while neat on shorter trips, but not so great on a three hour drive to the National Corvette Museum. I wear earplugs and it still hurts.

It's a grizzly, hear it roar!! :)
