What have people used for front speakers in a 69 ?? I have a custom box with 2 - 6x9 's in the rear but with the T tops stored I can't hear a thing. I have a high power Pioneer deck installed as well. What fits best in the front kick panels ??

Thanks
Mike

Hey Mike,
Does the 69 have speaker grills (holes) in the dash pad like my 74? I put new clarion speakers in place of the non-functioning originals using the stock mounting location. Vast improvement in fidelity, volume, and clarity. The Clarions are the two speaker(one mid range, and one tiny little tweeter to accentuate the highs) in one location type. Works better than anticipated and is completely hidden. Does that help any?

hello i have 3 1/2 two-way kappa series made by Infinity. they fit perfectly in the lower kick panels. i had to drill two inconspicous screw holes in the panels. that was the only mod needed.

I am assuming that the kicks in your '74 are the same as the ones in my '71 as I am in the middle of a tunes upgrade. I was going to replace the in dash speakers and put boxes in the back but assumed given the depth or more accurately lack thereof behind the kicks that there wouldn't be anything good that would fit. I assume you suggest these infinitys because they have good sound as well as a good fit?

hello
the infinity's have excellent sound qualities, especially for a small speaker. they are used extensively in many Disney attractions!
i used the S.W.A.G. method when i noticed the perforated holes in the kick are. looked like a speaker area. So when i removed them i found a pocket that the speakers would fit in. the rest is history!

Scientific Wild-A$$ Guess....learned that at the Sam Houston Institute of Technology

I got a 73 coupe with a pioneer system in it. All i got is 2x 100watt speakers under the dash and 2x 220watt 6x9 in the back and this sounds fine. The rear speakers are mounted in the corners by screwing in brackets to the fiberglass. Doing that you have plent of room for the t-tops.

good luck

I am preping for a stereo upgrade. I took the kicks off and found aftermarket custom auto sound 4X6 speakers that are total junk. The magnets had attracted a substantial amount of rust chunks from the opening. The opening appears to have the bolts for the doors and possibly a body mount bolt through the bottom. I wire brushed the compartment as best I could with a small brush (its a bit tight) and vacuumed out the area and as a last touch ran a strong magnet around it. I then painted the area with a metal rust resistant primer. It appears that moisture finds its way into this somewhat hidden area of the car and preventing this will help optimize a good set of speakers by keeping metal off the speaker magnets. The stereo setup is going in in a few weeks and I will post any great revelations.

Don't think you have speaker grills in your '69 dash. 4X6's fit under my '71's dash and I added another set of 4X6's behind the kick panels like the pre 70's had. The real music comes from the sidepipes.

On long drives, (we are talking after market tunes so I assume we all take them) one note, as sweet as it is, gets a little tired.

Are 4X6 the largest speakers that will fit in a '71 dash?

Re-did my total interior last winter. Had the car stripped to the firewall. Left the upper dash in place but had the bottom exposed. 4X6 was the speaker that fit the most holes in the glass underside. I can say from using it all summer, the kick panels supply the most sound. I get good stereo effect. to get the best stereo you have to lean towards the windshield. Dash speakers alone don't cut it. Just FM radio not some 400000000watts syst.
