I have a 1976 vette. When I had my 700R4 installed, the shop told me that there was no way to keep the exhaust on there. I think THEY couldn't bend the pipes right, but they said there was NO way that pipes could come down from the exhaust manifold, and go through the frame and clear the transmission. I had brand new dual 3" dual exhaust pipes/and mufflers installed 1 month earlier in a different place. It was no big deal for me when they told me this, I got a great deal on a set of hooker header/sidepipes. Well, now unfortunally, I had a little accident. *embarrased* my dumb ass drove over the back side of my ramps =( Cracked the fiberglass on passenger side, and broke the individual pipes going to the collector on the driverside completely off. They WERE rusting on the inside, so i think thats the reason. I am going to put my old exhaust back on. Will it clear? It is 2 1/2" pipe from the manifold to the holes in the frame, and 3" all the way back. My main question though, is would I be able to put a set of hooker headers on and clear the transmission?

your hooker headers will clear, but your pipes going by the trans. and into the crossmember might not make it .I had 2 3/4 pipes on mine before my swap to 700 and i had a turbo 400 and it barely fit ,when i swapped i made a new crossmember and put 2 1/2 exuast with hooker headers into flowmasters.

you don't by chance have a picture of your crossmember, do you? On a worst case sceneraio, would maybe the shorty headers, or different exhaust manifolds make it possible for the 2 1/2" pipes to clear the trans and throught the crossmember?

We have a '81 & we added a 700R4 transmission - when we changed Transmissions I made a new crossmember (out of a '82 Corvette automatic crossmember) and put on 2 1/2" exhuast pipes & added Hooker Headers into our new Flowmasters. It sounds great - loud, but great ...
