I was curious to hear about anyone who has added this to their Shark. How has it worked out? What did it cost for the tranny?Did it improve performance.I`m looking for some low end grunt. My rear is 3.07 so I need to compensate for it.
Thanks.
BBF.

rear gears and 700r4

a local trans shop where i had my truck trans rebuilt said that the 700's like the 373's or 342's for best performance and economy

Boy .... Todays your lucky day. I did this a year and a half ago. I had an 81 and it woke up that sleep little vette. The real kicker was I got better mpg with lots more get up and go.I got my trany from 4th gear. They are in the sunshine state( are we really going to Florida) I got all the info from Corvette Fever. It really wasn't bad at all. The local vette shop here said I would'nt get much on my return for all the work that had to be done. I can tell you they were dead wrong. I started giving C4's a run for their money. I miss that 81,but now I have an 86 conv. Just email me if you need more info

With the 3.07 rear end, you're best off going for the 700r4 instead of the 200-4r. The 700r4 has a very low first gear that will launch you in a hurry despite the 3.07 rear gear.

Be warned, however, that 4th is going to be a VERY tall gear with your rear gear ratio. You won't be using it until 70 mph or so.

I did the swap back in June. www.700R4.com
The only modification was the shortened drive shaft $35.
It is a different car. It pins me in the seat when I floor it. Well worth the $1900 total cost

Here's a little more info. I paid $1025.00 for a rebuilt 700R4 from Fourth Gear Inc. 2836 lent Rd. Apopka, Florida. Phone#407-880-2882. The guy there is really nice and helpful. First gear is 3:06, second 1:63, third 1:1 & overdrive .70. He only uses 1988 an up 700R4's. There are other things to do for this swap. The cross member has to be modified for a new trans mount. The drive shaft has to be shorten. The shifter gate has to be reworked but there's a kit for that purpose. Trans cooler lines need just a little bending. Adjusting the TV cable can be a little tricky only because this tranny shifts very positive. It can be set to jerk your fillings out of your teeth or shift like an old power slide. Agian I was very happy with the swap. At 80 mph I was turnning 1900 rpm's. I had a 2:73 rear gear. Good luck !!!!!

The one thing you will always ask yourself is "why did I wait so long"........Go for it :upthumbs

Thanks fellas for the info and advice.I think I`m going to go that direction. It`s exactly what my car needs.I`ll let you guys know how it turns out.
Thanks.

BigBlockFuelie - check out a thread started by ChipHead back in June. (700R4 for my 1980) He's also right in Sacto, so you can get the name of the shop he used, etc. That's the swapout I'll be looking at also. Let me know where you decide to go to ... and keep us posted.

Dawg-I`ll have to work on the wife a little first.I`m definitly going to do it though. There are two Corvette Shops in my area.I have already touched bases with one of them and they have encouraged me to go for it.

BBF - shoot me an email when you make your decision on which shop you use as I'd like to check them out too !!
thanks - the DawG

Hi there,
We also used a 700r in the Miss Mako project car. www.missmako.com
A sidebar with this, is that your torque converter clutch should be used, in order to prevent rear bearing overheating.
A very simple way, is to utilize the brake switch as a on and off switch, so that it only engages in 4th gear.
I was able to use 4.11 stock gears, and get 22.9 miles to the gallon with a 350 fuel injected engine. It was not high compression, or heavily modified, however, we were extremely quick off the line.
Driveshaft, TV cable bracketry, TCC hookup, transmission mounting point, were issues that we contended when we did it.

I got my 4L60E with my LT1 four years ago. I paid $3000 for both. I love it. You can cruise down the highway at 2200 RPM's, and seat of the pants is really noticeable with my 3.08 rear end. I am thinking of stepping up to a 4L80E to handle a monster motor and going with a more aggressive rear gear, but I would recommend this to anyone!
