Rob Wolley one of the better resto guys around here in Memphis called me the other day about a client that had contacted him about doing some restoration and mod work on a corvette here in Memphis. Rob says the guy tells him that he has a 1971 Corvette convertible that his brother-in-law left his wife after he passed away. He wanted him to come over and take a look at the car and let him know what he thinks about his plans for the car and if he would be interested in the job. So Rob calls me and asks me if I would like to tag along and take a look. Of course I did.

Well it turns out that this is not just any old car, it happens to be a 71 LS6!!! After seeing the car and it was in a million peices, Rob figures that he wants to do a standard frame off resto. Nope!! The guy wants to change the turn signals to 69 style, he wants the steel bumpers removed, he wants 74 gills put in he wants to change the interior and thats just part of the molestation this guy wants to do to this car.

Rob asked him if he had lost his mind!! The guy is completely nuts and does not care what the car is worth!! He says its his car and he can do any damn thing he wants to it. Keep in mind that this guy has an old k-car rusting in the back yard and drives an 88 astrovan. Not a clue!!!

I am standing there looking at this big beautiful aluminum head 454 with my mouth hanging open and thinking to my self this guy is really a nut!!!! At this point I'm not really sure what i'm looking at and I think to my self, this can't really be an LS6, but Rob pulls out his book and looks at the numbers and sure enough it is the real deal.

Rob is begging this guy not to do what he is contemplating doing, but the guy refuses to listen. Rob tells him straight up that he cannot and will not do that to that car.

So, I ask the guy what it would take to buy it and he tells me that his wife would never let him sell it. I ask him if I wrote him a check for $20,000.00 right now would he take it. He turns around walks into the house and comes out 5 min. later and say's "Wife says no, cars not for sale" So I start pleading with him not to do what he is asking Rob to do and try to explain to him what the historical significantence is with this car. He still says he could give two ****s and that its just a car!! Said he had been looking at different Corvette books and he likes certain things about the other cars and wanted them on his. I told him that if he would consider a trade that I would find him another car and that he could do whatever he wanted to it.

He takes me and Rob inside and introduces us to his wife (we think she was a woman) I tell her how much of a corvette lover that I am and the the car has some very significant history and that I would make her a very good deal if she would consider some kind of trade for another corvette. She said that she would think about it and get back to me.

I am still shaking my head at what I just witnessed this afternoon. Rob and I rode home almost in silence, all we could keep saying to each other, "is we can't believe that this guy really wants to do that to that car." "He has no idea what he has in his possesion."

Of course I can't stop trying to figure out how I can get these people to give it up and sell it to me!!

I still can't believe it. It is a once in a life time find and some goober and his gooberette has it and has no clue of what they have. Whats worse is they don't care!!!!

Wow! What a discovery, do you know what color, both exterior and interior this car is? There is a NCRS survey on these cars. As of 2001 there was 69 cars known and verified as originals.

I've been extremely interested in these cars, and feel that they are the last true performance big block rat and Zora's last triumph before his retirement.

Most of the examples, have all the goodies. M22 rockcrusher trans, ZL1 aluminum heads, HD dual disc clutch, Transistor Ignition.... and they run on todays lousy octane fuels!

Early Shark,

The interior was completely missing and I really didn't think to look for any of the parts. The body was white in some places and had been sanded down to the primer in most. The brother left it to them in that condition.

He had started the restoration back in 1991 according to his sister. She told us that he had owned the car for over 20 years. I don't think he was the first owner but was pretty close. The guy said he believed the car had around 70,000 miles on it but was not sure because he had not looked through all of the boxes for the speedo. He said that his wifes brother had always talked about the car and how much that it meant to him. Said the car was a brute and would run like a scalded ape.

I am going to try and go back over there this weekend and take a better look at it and see if I can talk them out of the car.

Wish me luck!!

I do wish you good luck!

If you can remember, look at the trim tag on drivers side body post and write down the build date and exterior/interior codes please.

It took me 9 years to acquire my LS6 coupe. Back in 1987 I took a '70 LS5 and replaced it with a '70 LS6 engine from a Chevelle. That car ran 12.90's with just a stock engine transplant. Car was equipped as a M20, A/C, 3:08 ratio drivetrain, very impressive in my book!

Second car was a '71 LS5, and I converted the engine to the correct components of a "71 LS6". This car was also a M20, A/C, 3:08 ratio drivetrain. Only internal modification of higher compression pistion (did not use stock LS5 8.5 to 1 compression). This car also ran extremely quick.

Finally after 9 years and 6 "70 to 72 early sharks" I purchased a low mileage, original, factory & dealer documented LS6 coupe, optioned out as M22, 3:70 ratio, HD dual disc clutch, Transistor Ignition, w/ PS, PB, Tilt/tele, Rear window defog, AM/FM stereo and I just LOVE IT.
It's Classic white with red vinyl and affectionately called the Great White(shark) of course!

Let's hope Goober& Gooberette are not subscribers to CAC !!!!

Well, if they were I would highly doubt that they would even consider doing to that car what they are contemplating. These are not Car enthusiasts by any stretch of the imagination.

If my term Goober & Gooberette offended you I apologize.

Hey, isn't that a movie 'Clueless in Memphis"...

did not offend me...I thought it was quite an appropriate description!
