All,

Can anyone tell me what the redline should be on the tach for a 71 LT-1? I'm considering purchasing a car and the redline is 6300. Does this seem correct?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark, According to my copy of NCRS judging & tech manual, Pp12, Tach Red Lines, "Tachometer Red Line Starts at RPM:" 1970 = 6500 rpm. 1971 = 6500. 1972 w/o AC = 6500, 1972 w/AC = 5600. That is right from the book I just bought back in May 2004. If you are looking at a picture of the tach I have found it hard to tell unless the pic quality is real sharp. Tom

Tom,

Thanks. Attached is the picture. There's a yellow band starting at 6300 going to 7000. I can't see a redline. Does this picture look correct for a 71 LT-1?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark, Boy that picture looks familiar! Just to confirm, that is an LT-1 tach. The others, even in bad pictures have a coloring that starts back around 5300 amd goes all the way to the end of the tach. Is that car in Washington state, red coupe (not orig. color) saddle leather interrior no motor suffix on decked block??? tom

Tom,

Thanks for the info. I looked closer and saw the yellow / red split at 6500. The car is a Brandshatch Green being sold by Nick in Arizona. The interior is black leather and I believe the engine stamp is correct - the photo isn't good, but the numbers the inspector wrote down seem correct. Have you heard anything about the car or seller?

Also, do you know any way to re-dye the black leather? The interior is original and some of the dye has completely worn off on the driver's seat.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark, I am not up on interrior dyes so I can't comment. I also can't comment on the seller or the car, I was thinking of a cae in Wa. state I was looking at. The guy was a stand up guy, 3rd or 4th owner, but the car had a decked block and an expansion tank. The price was way right, 18k,and the rest of the car was correct. I'm in NY and shipping was $2500 and I decided to look for something closer that I could take my books with me & go touch it before I buy. Anyway good luck. If you need #'s checked just post and I'll look in my NCRS books. Tom
