Does anyone know what type of finish the flat lower portion under the turn signal lenses of the front grills on a 70-72 is? Mine are peeling a bit and I would like to have them redone. Is there a company that specializes in this kind of stuff or should a decent body shop be able to handle it?

My judging manual states simply that the front grilles and trim are gray sand cast finish with polished chrome trim but doesn't mention a specific color code or shade for the lower portion. They always looked prety dark to me though. Maybe one of our Top Flight shark members will chime in.

For clarification, you are talking about the part at the bottom, just behind the chrome portion, right? Not the egg crate part?

I am talking about the part on the bottom, the flat part that runs parallel to the ground below the turn signal lens. It looks like the egg crate part is finished with the same type of gray textured coating. I am thinking of having the grills rechromed and then painting the gray parts. I have never had anything rechromed. Is it likely to be more economical to buy new grills @ $320 per side?

My front grills are original (as far as I can tell) The flat part is dark gray, and has no texture.

I can't tell if they were originally flat gray, or have faded that color though.
