I was working on my project 74' the other day, and all of a sudden I smelled gasoline. I removed the spare tire and top cover to find a steady leak coming from somewhere along the front bottom edge. I drained the tank and tried to find the source of the leak to no avail. The tank itself is in good shape. Nice and shiny on the inside, no rust. No rust on the outside either. Does anyone know of any products you can use to seal a tank??? I don't want to pull the tank off, but if I have to I will.

There is a two part epoxy that can be used for this. You can get it at Auto Zone or others. It looks like two clay bars - one white- one gray. Kneed them together and apply to a clean surface and wait till it hardens. I thought this wouldn't work but I got hit in the back in my Van and it split the seam on the gas tank. The fire dept. came out and the Fireman put this on the gas tank to stop the leak. The gas was still dripping out when he did this. It seal the tank and it was still on there 4 years later when I sold the Van. Good luck.

Here is a kit put out by Eastwood.

But to me, if you have a leak best to get a new tank, they are not that expensive and then you are sure you are okay.

I wouldn't fool with it or with any of the band-aid sealing fixes; new tanks aren't that expensive, and they don't leak. Not a good thing when your tank springs a gasoline leak on the garage floor during the night, especially if you have a hot water heater out there, and you lose the car, the garage, and the house.

TANK UNREPAIRABLE...

I pulled the tank yesterday to find the whole back bottom edge was paper thin. As I was using a wire brush on it, the brush itself was pulling out little holes! Does anyone know where I could get a cheap tank? Does anyone sell plastic ones? I'd like to get one of those if I could. Wouldn't have to worry about rust.

I just ordered from these guys. $216.32 with shipping, gaskets, o-ring, filler neck screws & lock ring included! Very good service, was even willing to send me a picture of the tank to verify all the hook-ups were there! Thanx Paul!
