I have a 78 with tilt and telesopic wheel. The ignition switch will only work when the column is tilted to the lowest position. Sometimes it is even hard to get it to start here. I have replaced the starter and it not a heat soak problem. It is more difficult when the car interior is hot than when cool.

Could it be the link between the key and the switch?

I the samething happen on a 77. there is a bar that connects from where the key is to the switch which is mounted on top of the column. The bar is like the thickness of a coat hanger. You should be able to see it where the steering column hinges for the tilt.

what you need to do is get at the switch on top of the column and adjust the bar distance. hard to explain but if you can get to the switch and also see the bar you will understand what I mean. You spacing has changed basically. You need to reposition the bar so it pulls the switch pin to the on position.

Thanks Jim! I know where you are describing and will get at it.

It could also be that the switch has slipped on the column making the bar distance to short. Easy trouble shoot once you get at it.

Glad I could help. Let us know how it works out.

Ok Jim got it done and works fine. Just slid it down the column enough to start easily in the tilt up position.

Thanks again!
