I need to repaint the bumpers on my '79... How do you remove the emblem from the rear bumper? Is it necessary to remove the bumper??

Thanks!

>>>>>>bump>>>>

bump back to the top, I just pried mine off with a putty knife, I knew I was going to get a new one. Now the reason for the bump, anyone know how the heck to reinstall the emblem? I can't see any way to get at the studs to put the speed nuts on them.

mine has 2 little posts that go thru the bumper with speed nuts on the inside
I would crawl under the back and see if thats what you have on yours ,might have to remove the spare though..

It has 3 speed nuts, that's the problem, I can't figure out how to get to the backside of the emblem to put the speed nuts on. There is a reinforcing plate in the way, and I can't even get my hand in there to feel the studs from the emblem coming though.

Hubby had my 78 painted in 2000. I was a bit ticked off at the shop owner.

He first told me he "lost" my rear emblem, so I made him purchase a new one. After I got the 78 back I discovered that he had probably ruined the old emblem in removing it because there were gouges in the fiberglass under the emblem. The replacement appears to have been installed with a tan colored glue.

We moved across the country shortly after that and the shop owner passed away. While I would have preferred beter quality...for what we paid for the paintjob, I am very satisfied.

Late model cars use two sided tape to secure emblems. there is no reason you could not do the same, just use the pins for lineup

Heidi's must have been installed with weatherstripping adhesive. Not the most conventional but effective.

It sounds like the only other option is to remove the back cover from the car to secure it properly.

I would go with one of the first two unless I was going to put it under the NCRS scrutiny.

thanks, I gave up, and definitely was not pulling the back bumper off. It was stuck on with the sided tape, and it looks perfect.
