Okay, I just got a bunch of 8 tracks for the Corvette, and I played the first one but it seemed really fast. Is there a way I can fix this and get it back to normal playing speed?

Thanks! :D

TR, man you're lucky that we have a bunch of old farts around here. You just might find someone who knows how to repair eight-track tape players. :CAC

Yours works?!?! Lucky skunk!! ;LOL

I hope someone can give you the answer you need Stallion.

My radio works great, but not a sound from the tapes. If any of you "old farts" know how to help me out, I'm all ears.

Does it do this on all tapes? Perhaps motor speed circuit may be bad. Hard to tell.

Who you calling old??? :L

Can you tell (hear, feel) if the capstan is turning? Need a place to start. Have you had the unit out to see if the belt is bad, broken?

Yes, all tapes. Any ideas how to fix it?

Thanks!

Hang in there TR, I'm sure we have a few who still remember how to repair and adjust them. ;)

Don't ya just love it when that song f-a-d-e-s down........then "click" to next track........then fades up to finish the rest of the song. :eyerole

;LOL

Someone may have replaced the belt and put the wrong diameter (cross section) belt on.

If the belt pulleys have grooves in them and the belt is outside of the grooves on the pulley.

There may be a motor speed adjustment resistor near by the motor. Give it a twist a little bit at a time.

Put some heat shrink tubing on the motor pulley and shrink to fit to increase pulley diameter.

Other things you probably don't want to get into. See above post.

Are the tape you have re-recorded or are they originals? Re-recorded tapes may have been duped on a slow running recorder and will sound fast on a normal speed player as a result.

These are the original tapes. I would like to fix it myself (if that's in the realm of plausability), whereas I don't want to spend too much money on it. But I would like to get it working.

I'll take a look around.

Of course it is in the realm of plausibility, and if what I've seen of your inquisitiveness is any indication of your abilities, you'll have the thing playing just fine in no time at all, TR. :upthumbs

Thanks, Ken. :D

BTW, there are some really good 8-tracks that I have. Yes, Boston, Clapton, Sting, and many many more. :D

I didn't know anybody even had any 8-tracks any more, I thought they were extinct, and I am an old fart.
custom autosound 6 disk CD run from a stock looking radio for me, I just can't see those small numbers from the drivers seat:L

If you pull the deck, look to see a hole with a turn screw inside. or one that has a manufacturers label over it. turn it while playing a tape.unless the belt is bad, it should work.mike

TR,
Wow, a piece of history.:cool I can remember that happening to me once, many moon's ago. My problem was that my player ate one of my tapes. A piece of the tape wrapped itself around one of the drive wheels. You could hardly see it but it was there. It changed the timing because the diameter of the drive wheel increased. :s Look in the front with a flashlight and make sure there is no old tape floating around in there. Hope that helps. :D

Okay, I'll have a look.

Is an 8-track player one of those things that I can take apart and easily put it back together? Becuase if I start unscrewing, I don't want to mess up this original 8-track player. Know what I mean?

KOPBET, thanks for the reply. Things happened at work and I'm just getting back on CAC to catch up. I haven't torn into it yet - no time lately. I'll check to see if I can hear the capstan turning and go from there.

VRGSVET - thanks for those sites. I'll check them out and if I can't get to the bottom of it myself, then I'll at least have options.
