-Yep, have '80-C3 brought in from out of state with bone-stock 350ci-sb (L48 with only 15k-miles), so am wondering if anyone has actual first-hand experience with what I am going to encounter trying to get the car approved in california, --owing that the Calif.'80-C3's had to have the 305ci-sb engine with the '81-type Rochester-Qjet having the integral computer-controlled/solenoid-valve when sold here here new! Discovered the Calif.-EPA ruling states any '74 or newer out-of-state purchased car must first undergo apparently stringent smog-testing, -even if the car is located in a smog-exempt region of california for example (once car is tested, then does not have to be further smogged if in a no-smog region of calif.)! So only have the car initially calif.-registered so far, but have not subjected the car even to an off/Smog-analyzer, --owing that the engine-configuration (they can tell engine-size by engine serial-number I guess) is apparently "black-listed"!!! Please advise of any knowledge about this gall-dang situation (any tricks around this will be appreciated, can E-mail me if preferred)...

REPLIES:
Jason- when I got the car initially documented with Calif.-DMV they said, --"you cannot SELL this car in Calif. until you successfully obtain Smog-certificate, and they are next going to closely inspect your car to make sure it is physically in compliance!" (--to which I replied: "I've no intention of selling the car..."); --but are you suggesting this is a possible loop-hole in the Smog-procedure, --that I should in fact go first to a simple corner Smog-station and just say that: "I am selling, --and so need to get it Smogged" (hoping that I find a Smog-shop that won't just say- "Oh sorry pal, these papers say you must go have the car Inspected first!")? --Right now the car has the Red/Calif.DMVtemporary-sticker in rear-window, Tennessee Lic.-plate on rear... ~Bob

Yoda- thanks for referal to the earlier discussion about this topic, but it still leaves me in a quandry about the '80-C3's unique small-engine requirement... ~Bob

Have you already started the registration process?

If not go to the DMV or AAA with all the paperwork and pay the transfer & registration fees.
They will give you a document stating that the registration is incomplete pending a smog check.

Go to your local smog shop and get it smogged and tell them you need to smog it because you are selling it.

If it passes then you are home free.
Take the certificate back to the DMV or AAA and your done.

If this doesnt work... contact me

Bob,

Here is a very informative thread on this very subject that will probably answer most of your questions and even has the CA GOV website to check out ;)
