Please tell me there is a special trick to installing a booster on a 81. Do I have to drop the steering colum and dash cluster to get to the upper studs? I would appreciate any help. Thanks, Chris

Heavy,

You don't drop the steering column.

You do have to be some kind of contortionist to maneuver your hands to the 2 top nuts.

Generally, disconnect the rear base of the master cylinder from the brake booster's front side (in the engine compartment side). Do not disconnect brake lines.

Remove the 4 nuts

Disconnect the rod from the brake pedal. You'll probably have to get a couple of hours at the local masseuse, but it is that straight forward.

Good luck :thumb

It also helps to remove the seat. It just give alittle more room to twist yourself into the knot that it takes to those top nuts.

If you have big hand; it will be harder. Good luck.

Remove the seat for sure. Also you will need a deep socket, u-joint and 12" extension to get the upper nut off. Take a couple of Motrin when you are done. :thumb

On the positive side. When you're done with this job, it only can get easier :D

Good luck!

Finally finished it today. My big hands took a beating, but it is done. Ready for a weekend trip.
