82 humming sound

I went out this morning to start my 82, and nothing. Replaced the battery that was 6mo old, and it started up fine. The problem is that i can hear a faint humming sound from the back of the car. I believe its my fuel pump. Does this mean I have to get a new fuel pump relay? How do I get the thing to shut off without diconnecting the battery?

Hi Daleman, I had a simular problem about 12years ago. Mine is a early 84, the oil pressure switch was bad, causing the f. pump to always run. I think they had a mid year change on those, I found a GM service bulliten that said something about the oil press. switch sticking closed.

82 Oil Pressure switch vs Fuel Pump

Funny you mentioned that. I just changed the Oil Pressure switch the day before. My OP guage was pegged since receiving the car 8mo ago, so I decided to change it out. The guage appears to be working now, but my gas pump won't shut off. So, you think the OP switch is faulty in some way?hnoes

From what I remember is they had a couple of oil sending units for '84 crossfires, like a mid-year change. I think the 1st one I got had more electrical connections, so I knew it wasn't the right one. Thats when I did some digging & found that GM bulletin. I ended up using a AC Delco unit, you might have to get one from a vette supplier. Good luck.
