the power window motor failed with the window down! any ideas on how to get the window up? and get the motor out? thanks in advance for your help.

i would check to see if you blew a fuse .then i would check to see if the wiring got cut or kinked .then check your switch .the motor is more than likely okay .

I agree with Terry82, on my 82 the switch was the problem. Troubleshoot the electrical side first before getting involved with the motor.

thanks terry for the e-mail. i failed to mention the door is apart and i put 12 volts to the motor on both terminals. it just hums a little. it does not look like anything is jammed. i tryed prying up a little -no help. is that motor strong enough to (when off) to overcome my prying and the spring?

I replaced my window motor years ago and the memory isn't what it was. I know you have to drill out the rivets holding the regulator assembly to the inner door. I think I removed the window track from the glass and then you can get the assembly out of the access hole in the door. The full down position is good, cause that is when the tension is on the spring. You need to put a bolt though the regulator assembly, through a hole in the regulator gear to hold the spring tension to allow you to remove the motor. Thats the basic procedure, but I'm going by memory. There are some great posts that give detailed instructions and photos to guide you that you should search for. To me, the most important aspect is getting the bolt through the window regulator gear and securing that bad boy, there is a lot of tension on that spring. Also, the spring helps to lift the window, if the spring is broken, might not even be the motor, I don't think the motor can lift the window without the help of the spring.
Good luck.

have not had a spring on mine in ten years .it should have one but it works fine with out it .it may not be doing the motor any good.

I just did mine about a month ago..
not that bad,did not take the regulator out
just have to be careful b/c of the spring being loaded
there is a access panel on the bottom of the door to access the motor.
worst part is getting your hand in there with a wrench to get to the bolts..I used a 7/16 wrench to get them in and out.
Good Luck!!
you should be able to get to the motor with the window down....

so i slid (2) 3/8 bolts through the inner skin of the door above the arms and tightened them down, figuring this would hold down the spring tension. i fought for 2 hours but got the motor out. i slowly backed out the bolts and the window didn't move. i had to pull it up--no tension! the spring is shot, i guess that wore out the 'up' on the motor. gonna order parts. thanks everyone for the help.
