82 smog pump noise

I just bought an 82 and the smog pump makes a VERY LOUD pumping noise. Is that normal? Any ideas?

It will be loud if one of your hoses popped off. Otherwise, not really. It does make kind of a putting sound, but it's normally not very loud compared to sound that your injectors make.
Try taking the belt off and turning it by hand. A 15MM open end wrench will do it.
If the shaft or the impeller vanes are loose inside you will be able to tell, as they clunk when turned.
They are really bloody awful to get back together, in case you're tempted to take it apart.

They can also be louder than normal if the reed valve is shot. The reed valve is at the end of the metal tube that comes off of the exhaust.
