84 Roof Mounting

I just got in a used glass roof panel for my 84 Vette from a wonderful CACC member. Now the roof was off an 85 and according to what I read on this sight it should fit mine but it does not as the mounts on the front of the roof are totally different than mine. Is 84 Roof unique maybe?

1984-1986 1/2 should be the first design.
1986 1/2-1988 second
1989-1996 third.
As far as I know the 84 to 86 1/2 should be the same.
The difference in the 86 1/2. Early 1986 design measures 4 9/16" from the sunvisor pin to the roof panel mounting bolt.
Late 1986 measures 2 3/4

Adaptor kit for C4 roofs

I;m pretty sure you can get an adapter kit that adapts a later roof onto an early C4. From memory I've seen it at Ecklers (www.ecklers.com) or Mid America (www.madvet.com).

I think it just consists of a metal plate for each side of the front of the roof that effectively "repositions" the bolt holes. Looks easy to fit,

I just replaced mine. I purchased a new one from the GM dealer. I also had to get a adapter kit. You will have to remove some trim, visors, old mounting brackets, install your new ones, then align the roof to the brackets. All in all, took me around 4-5 hours.

I looked at ecklers kit and will purchase it tomorrow. Doesn't look to involved so I think it will be fairly easy hopefully less than the 4-5 hours. I looked at their diagrams for the roof designs and this roof I got is off an 89 and newer. I know it came of an 85 car but I would bet it had been retrofitted to that car before the current owner bought it. Thanks all.

It is not that hard to change the hardware. I changed mine on my 85 and it took less than 2 hrs to change and adjust the top. Good luck, Guy

Sounds like more work than you bargined for....I did'nt know there was a difference in these parts.....

Ecklers discontinued there retro fit kit but I was able to get a kit from the dealer for 40 bucks less so I did that and roof fits great.
