greetings,

since i bought my car, i have noticed that it takes a few "spins" of the starter before it starts. forget the injectors, timing, wires, plugs, fuel pressure, filter and pump, etc.,.

the specific question is;

the oil pressure switch when reaching approx 4lbs of pressure while cranking, will activate the fuel pump. while i haven't had a chance to check the helms, if the fuel pump relay was bad, would the car still start or in some way, run off of the pressure switch? my first thoughts would be that the oil pressure switch would close sending power to the fuel pump relay and she starts and if the relay was bad, i would have a no start situation.

i have never heard the fuel pump "prime" when turning the key to the "on" position but, have decent fuel pressure at the rails. any comments?...thanks!

Both my 86 and 87 always took a few spins of the starter to crank when warm. I asked my mechanic and he told me that it was just a L98 thing and all of them did it. When cold though, it only took a bump of the starter to crank them.

I always chalked it up to the absence of the cold start injector pulse when the engine was warm.

thanks for reply however, it does not matter if cold or warm, it all starts the same way......

the relay is working

If it starts and runs, the relay is working, as is the pump. It is fed by either and both. There is a 4 second timed run of the fuel pump when you turn the key on. If you really want to know, connect a fuel pressure gauge and observe fuel pressure with the key just ON; not started.

Actually, the cold start injector was not needed, as later ECMs add fuel, with wider injector pulses, instead.

thanks for reply,

i thought so. i have placed a fuel pressure tester on the system and it is well. it just seems like it takes a bit to "get started". i am thinking that i may have gapped the plugs a bit too wide, and that may be a "reach" but, it is the only thing that comes to mind.
