My starter has been making a ticking sound recently but only after the engine has heated up. When starting cold the starter sounds normal. Over the weekend I was running with the air off and top down and the temp reached the max before the fans turned on. When I went to restart the car nothing. Once it cooled off the next day it started right up. Did I heat soak the starter and should I just replace it. BTW does that heat blanket that Mid America sells for the starter make any diff?

Heat soaking is one word for it, how about frying or roasting.

I've use blankets similar to what they offer and they did help me. The best thing I did was to go to a mini-starter, and a heat shield.
Heat is the enemy of electrics!

Slow roasted. Sauted. Cooked. Many of those words comes to mind.

You might want to monitor you engine temps and make sure that it is cooling properly. My 92 still has its original starter and it's still working just fine. Then again, I'm running a 160 stat and a chip that turns on the fans sooner than stock and a recently added Big Mouth.

So a new starter is in my future and I was thinking about one of the switches that lets you turn on the fans when you want to.

I never had a problem with my vette, however my TA went through a starter pretty quick. I should say starter solenoid. The heat just poors on the solenoid off the header. But since they were cheap, and have a lifetime warranty I replaced the whole thing. I ended up making a heat shield, because finding one was near impossible.
