You just need to check it out!~!!:thumb

My 93 did the same thing. So add the vats and the tps(both shut mine down)to the list Junk gave you. These cars get very expensive if you throw parts at them. Most of the time the part is replaced because it has a bad rep not because it is faulty. Doing a good diagnostics approach using an FSM will save you a small fortune. Looking at the diagnostic charts for the various systems you will note they have several steps to eliminate bad grounds etc before they declare the part itself to be bad. Think of it this way which is easier to push a chain from the back to were you want it or to pull the chain from the front. Throwing parts is like pushing the chain and diagnosing is like pulling the chain.

I am not saying that is what you are doing. I just felt wordy and had a need to share my frustration with all the parts throwers (including in business mechanics) out there.

Good luck and keep us informed on your progress

You've learned well Grasshopper!~!!! :D

John and GM thanks for the response

after it died the first time, it started after about 15 min and ran another 20 feet and died

led us to believe it was something simple wrong

Mechanic checked everything and turned out to be the dist

was the original and my mechanic said it was full of rust ( worst he has seen )

have not got the bill yet but I'm sure it will be around a grand

first problem I have had in the 3 years I have owned the car

hope ruby behaves for another 18yrs

That seems awfully high for just replaceing the OPTI. By the way find out if he used the newer vented replacemant and did he make the modification to make sure it did not get moisture in it again.

I'm just ball parking the $

He said something about the vented unit but gave reasons why he did not or could not use it

steve

Jump in her guys I think he should have been able to hook up the vented opti. What do you think?

NO reason not to go to the vented opti just a different cap?, and the harness. If the harness is available it is a "bolt on" easy install, I think. I know if my Opti ever goes that is what I am going to do. Even if I have to make it myself.

I agree with you John on the parts changer thing. Personally, I like to diagnose stuff it is more intresting. However, it usually is more friendly on your pocket book (as a mechanic) to be hanging parts. That almost always pays better than diag. How many people do you know that want to pay for maybe a couple or few hours of diag. at 76 an hour??? I don't like the system at all but I cannot change it myself. If i had the coin and was smart like Junkie I would open my own shop and do stuff my way and charge a fair labor rate. Dealerships don't pad the pockets of the techs well, just the owners. Then we still cannot get the tools and stuff we need, stupid SOB's. But I digress....

That guy sounds kinda of lazy and doesn't want to be bothered by the sounds of it. I actually like working on Corvettes, just don't rush me, you cannot "flat rate" Corvettes. This ain't a Sentra.

If you replaced the opti, I hope you also replaced the water pump at the same time.
Andy :w

update: new dist in water pump looked fine and fluid checked out OK so did not feel the need to replace

found a little oil around the air compressor. so told him to follow up and see what it is

well there was a small crack in the line that oil from the freon seemed to slowly leak, when he went to look deeper the line broke.

He told me it was his fault

I am buying a new compressor at his cost and he is putting it in. tells me it is about a 4 hr job.

hopfully I will get her back next week and have trouble free crusin for many years:L

thanks for the response's

steve

I am confused. You say there was a leak in the line to the compressor and the mechanic broke the line. Why then are you replacing the compressor did he do something to it when he broke the line? If so were I come from that would be his resposibility to repair at his cost because he broke a good part trying to work on a connection to it. Yes you gave him the instructions to find and repair the leak but his damaging good parts and then offering to put them in if you pay his cost for them is unethical to say the lest. This is totally his responsibility to absorb the cost of making you whole again. I would question the competancy of this mechanic since he was not able to put the vented opti in as he should have. Do yourself a favor and don't bend over in front of this person.

A line broke but you need a a/c compressor??? What? 4hr job that thing is so easy to get it is stupid. The lines are nothing special either. You might want to (from the sounds of it) find another guy to work on your Corvette.

Do you suppose he is going to charge for the time the vacuum pump is purging the system and he is off drinking coffee or working on someone else's car.

Probably and only let it pull vacuum for like 3 minutes then move on.

UPdate

compressor did not break, radiator for the air cond one of the lines going into the unit had a small crack that let go when he went trouble shooting.

I suppose I could of said you broke it you fix it

he also did not have to tell me he broke it

just one of those things

hopeing to get her back this week

s

When its done do what you seem to like and drive it with a big smile on your face. As we all know these cars can bring such a charge just being seen in them and experiencing the power of a V8. Thats why we are hear helping others to get the enjoyment you get from your car. :v

update

getting ruby tonight:happyanim:

840.00 for the replacement of dist opti

140.00 replacement of air core

should be smooth running for a while

thanks for the imput

steve

:thanks:for the update. At my age I am not sure but I think when my car is not running and I finally get it back I begin to remember how much fun it is to just drive one of these cars. It is almost as exciting as my wedding night I think but who can remember that far back;LOL

UPDATE

I was told the reason we did not go to the vented opti is the

95-96 Opti that is vented will not physically fit to the drive unit
