'93 Transmission.. Which one?

Hey guys,


I have an automatic '93 'vette for which I am trying to find a transmission but seem to be having the hardest time finding.

Now according to most listings, I should have a T.H. 700 but I've read some places that some '93's actually came equiped with a 4L60E transmission instead? (what's on the 94's and above..)


can anyone tell me how i can tell for SURE what transmission i have?

Although I am not sure of the exact cutoff point, early VIN#'s from 93 have 700r4's then GM switched to 4L60 Auto's...
I am sure the exact answer is coming as we have an awesome group of members

now is that the 4L60 Auto or the 4L60E?

what i want to know really is that can i take a '94 tranny and put it on mine (if mine is a late model, which i believe it is)..

i have a '95 tranny right now which doesn't fit..

Easy way to tell if you have a 700R4 (which is a 4L60, just another name) or if you have a 4L60E (not e meaning electronic) is see if the trans has a big round electrical plug on one side. and if the tail housing has a electrical plug going to the transmission speed sensor if that is the case you have a 4L60E.

you could also pull the pan off the trans and see if there is more then 1 solenoid in the trans then it is a 4l60e if it only has the lock-up soleniod towards the front of the trans then it would be a 4l60(AKA 700r4).

That is to the best of my knowledge.

- 4L60 (700R4) will have a TV (Throttle valve) cable going in to the trans from the ASR box. It will also have a 4 wire plug going into the trans. It controls converter lockup and tells the computer if it's in 4th gear or not. It's NOT a computer controlled transmission

- 4L60E will NOT have a TV cable and will have more wires going into the transmission. The PCM controls the shifting of the transmission.

If the 95 trans wont "work", the 94 shouldn't either. They are both 4L60E's, which probably means you have the regular 4L60 (700R4)

The 4L60 and 700R4 are the same transmission.
GM only changed their naming system to make things more standardized.

The 4L60E is on all 94+ models and is controlled by the PCM.

Although i have heard once before that some very-late 93s had the 4L60E, i have yet to see one.

tomorrow i'll go and check which one my transmission is.



also, before i got the '95 transmission, i had a '89 transmission sent to me, which also DIDN'T fit.

the '89's had a 700R4 right? is so, any idea why neither a '89 nor a '95 would fit in the car?

so apparently the '89 transmission is listed as a 700R4..

this makes things really weird.

Unless it's a custom job meaning someone modified your vette with a different trans, then this doesn't make sense to me.. Which part of the trans does not fit? can you take pictures of the trans? also a 4l60E and 700R4 are the same size trans the only differences (I can think of) are the 700R4 has a Throttle Valve Cable and 1 electrical connector with I think 4 wires on it.. the 4l60e has no TV cable and 2 electrical connectors on it one on the tail shaft and on the case.

Are you trying to swap in a NON corvette 700R4? because the Tail Shaft would be different as far as I know because on most GM's the trans mounts to a cross member and not the C-Beam or whatever it's called that beam that goes from the tail shaft to the diff. that is my guess as to why it does not fit. Also if you want to make shure the the trans that was in it is a 700R4 you can check the trans pan I don't remmber the # of bolts but it is a square or rectangular pan.

my transmission has a "round" 5 pin female plug in it.

the 4l60e has a completely different type of plug. its something like a linear set of male pins. it also has i believe another plug where another cable goes in, which my car doesn't have. hence i am reasonably sure that mine doesn't have a 4L60E


the transmission that was on the '89 had a "square" 4 pin female plug in it. everything basically fit and looked right. just that the plugs were different shapes and had different number of pins. (i think also that the '89 had a slightly differenent shape near one of the ends of the transmission, but i can't quite tell what that was..)

hope this might give you some info?


i am for the moment just getting my current transmission rebuilt, but it would be nice to know what transmission i have on it.


isn't there anyway that GM can tell me from my VIN number what transmission my car is "supposed" to have on it?

I dont know if they can get it from the VIN. But if your having your current transmission rebuilt, why dont you ask the persont who is rebuilding it? They can give you a definitive answer on exactly what it is. Thats what I would do.
