My current engine has died. I plan on building up an lt1 383. I am going to buy a long block realllllllly soon and I dont know which year I should want.

From what I understand 95 got the vented optispark, so I dont want to go below that. 96 got obdII, and I dont know why that is better, or what it really does that would be better.

I will probably be getting a block from an F body, so the 97 lt1 should be included in this problem. Just wondering which one I should go with.

I have been told about a program lt1 edit which lets you tune the computer without having to pull out proms, which years include that. Are there any years that are a true distributorless system (obdII got a crank sensor right?).

Thanks for the help,

chris

The 95 to 96 is just a computer issue? or is it like the 95/ pre 95 where the old optispark wont fit with the new block?

anyone?

The 95 and 96 are (LT1) are the same engine. They both have a vented optispark. The 96 had the ODB2 system, there were 60 possible diagnostic codes for the 95, and 140 for the 96.

In 96 there was an optional LT4 engine good for 30 more hp. DIS ignition came out on the LS1 in 97.

The LT1 edit will work on either year.

thanks! That is exactly what I needed to know.

Still any pros or cons?

Also anyone have any doubts about an f body 2 bolt block holding up a 383? I would get arp studs etc...
