Does anybody know why the passenger seatbelt has a plastic interior-colored cover that’s the four to five inches long? It’s located near the chrome buckle?

The driver seat belt does not have this plastic “shield”, I have checked six other ‘96 cars and they are all equipped like this.

Thanks in advance!

mine is that way too.... for some reason the passenger side has the seatbelt release strap... like the C5's do, but it is shielded with that plastic cover. Basically, all it is is a fold in the seatbelt, when you get in an accident the force will break the threads holding the fold in, and it will release a bit. I think it helps reduce the sudden force on a person's body during an accident, and it has a label on the inside saying the belt needs to be replaced.

Vettelt193,

Thanks for shedding some light on this, I was baffled, especially after seeing six other cars having the same set up.
